Pacing fillies on display on Tuesday
While the first round of the Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund eliminations for three-year-old pacing colts got under way on Monday evening at Harrington Raceway, the sophomore pacing fillies will take center stage on Tuesday in a trio of DSBF elims. Only eight will return for the $100,000 DSBF final on Governor's Day, July 30, now an evening affair.
In Tuesday's fourth race, the first $20,000 DSBF elim for this group came up light. Fancy Sound (Jim Morand) will likely be the favorite from post five, while Cedar Hall Heiress (George Dennis) will be the second choice from post six. But insiders Fountain Pen (Jeff Fout) and Sugar Spin (Allan Davis) have a legitimate upset chance in this group although they would be seriously overmatched in the other two splits.
Several races later on the card in the evening's eighth race, the second DSBF elim split appears to be a match race. Totally Rusty was absolutely dominant in the spring in the first round at Dover Downs, winning the final by 13 lengths in the slop. But after changing hands from trainer Doug Lewis to Ross Croghan, Totally Rusty (Corey Callahan) has yet to regain her winning ways. She was fifth in the Lismore final at Yonkers and then fourth in an overnight event at Harrah's Philadelphia.
But Totally Rusty did draw post three for this event and she still boasts the best credentials, having won four of six starts and over $95,000 this year and sporting 12 wins in 15 career outings with a lifetime bankroll of over $225,000. She will likely be the 4-5 favorite in this event and onlookers are perhaps expecting to see her return to form in the elims and then unleash her best effort in the July 30 final.
Just to her outside is the lone filly who could upend her in this elim - Gigi Deo (Victor Kirby). Last fall Gigi Deo was among the best of this bunch, but she has only won once in seven starts this year and banked only $30,000. She will leave from post four and could certainly post the upset if Totally Rusty is not on her game. But be advised that Gigi Deo has also not performed to expectations yet this season.
Then two races later in the 10th, the third DSBF elim for sophomore fillies also appears to be a match race. Love Forbidden (Callahan) draws the rail and owns a solid 3-2-1 slate and $45,000 bankroll from six starts this year. But on the far outside is Purrfect Bags (Kirby), who boasts the most lucrative score of the season among this bunch courtesy of her 11-1 upset tally in the $120,000 Lismore Final at Yonkers. She has won three of five starts this year and 10 of 13 career outings from trainer Jim King, Jr., and will be among the serious contenders for the grand prize on Governor's Day.
