Paganol upsets Race 1 on 2015 Kentucky Derby card with speed

Paganol sprinted to a one-length lead rounding the first turn and never came back to the pack, registering a 14-1 upset in the first race on Saturday’s Kentucky Derby program.

With Robby Albarado up, Paganol extended her advantage to three lengths after three-quarters of a mile and continued to widen entering the stretch, passing the quarter-pole with a six-length edge in the 1 1/16-mile main track allowance for fillies and mares.

She cruised to the wire much the best, scoring by a 4 ¾-length margin while stopping the teletimer in 1:42 2/5, and the four-year-old filly paid $30.20 to win.

Trained by Chris Hartman, Paganol is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Tiz Wonderful and is owned by James L. and Ywachetta H. Driver.

The chestnut improved her record to 7-3-0-0.
