Parx Racing top picks for April 13

Parx Racing features 11 races on Wednesday’s card, with four of those included in TwinSpires’ midweek bet-back offer.

#6 Mikey’s Jewel (2-1) opened as the morning line favorite in this race for fillies and mares three years old and up after she ran third at today's distance at Parx on March 30. The bay filly hit a Brisnet Speed figure of 60, tied for the highest last race Speed rating among the field, and has finished in the money in her last four starts, all at Parx.

While she has bested rivals #1 Allegretto (6-1), #2 Starship Blanca (5-1), #5 Corbally (15-1), and #7 Liam’s Lady (12-1) in recent races, she’s never made a trip to the winner’s circle at Parx in four career tries.

#4 The Biggest One (3-1) triumphed at Parx two back when running seven furlongs under jockey Gerardo Milan in a $7,500 claiming race. The concern here is the bay filly has never raced at a route distance, but she’ll have a familiar companion in Milan, who retains the mount, and returns to the stable of trainer Mario Dominguez, who has won at a 17% clip this meet and at a 38% rate in the first race after the claim.

If you're looking for a longer shot to back with TwinSpires' bet-back promotion, look to #8 Sprite’s Lady (10-1), who hit a 60 Brisnet Speed rating at a mile and 40 yards last out at Tampa Bay Downs on March 13. The chestnut filly is back under the guidance of trainer Scott Lake, who has won 6-of-18 races in the last 14 days at Parx.

Race 3: $12,500 claiming (1 mile, 1:49 p.m. ET)

#6 Malibu Anthem (4-1) placed second in a mile and 70-yard race at Parx on March 28 after clocking a career-best 81 Brisnet Speed figure. The five-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon may reach the winner’s circle upon cutting back to a mile and will run under jockey Luis Rivera, a 17% winner this meet who has a 3 2-1-0 record with the bay at Parx this year. Conditioner Ruperto Perez has enjoyed success at Parx as well, with nine wins and 10 second-place finishes in 48 starts this meet. Malibu Anthem has raced at this track seven times in her lifetime, with four of those starts resulting in victories.

#7 Sugar Streak (7-2) won by a nose in her most recent outing, a one-mile and 70-yard race at Parx on March 7, but the six-year-old mare is making a move up in class in her first start for trainer Michael Pino (an 18% winner this meet). With Ruben Silvera picking up the mount, Sugar Streak is all the more appealing, but her 74 Speed figure pales in comparison to Malibu Anthem’s 81 last out.

Race 4: $25,000 maiden claiming (6 1/2 furlongs, 2:16 p.m. ET)

#7 Just Divine (2-1) clocked a 73 Brisnet Speed figure in his most recent start, a six-furlong sprint at Parx on March 14 in which he finished fourth in a field of five. With blinkers and Lasix added, he should see improvement, but trainer John Servis has another appealing race entry in #8 Muttley (3-1), who hit a 75 Brisnet Speed rating in a second-place finish last out at Parx in a six-furlong sprint.

Jockey Frankie Pennington (an 18% winner this meet) has finished in the money in his last two rides with Muttley and guided the bay colt to a career-high 78 Brisnet Speed rating two back at six furlongs.

The grandson of War Front should be in the mix, but Servis' son Tyler has a hot contender in #1 Showing Off (5-1), who drops in class and cuts back in distance after finishing fourth in a one-mile, 70-yard trip at Parx on March 22. The gelding made his debut at six furlongs on Jan. 31 and rallied after being bumped at the start to hit a 91 Late Pace rating and finish third.

With the rail post winning at a 27% clip, he's a good bet to reach the winner's circle.

Top pick: #1 Showing Off

Race 5: $7,500 claiming (one mile, 70 yards, 2:43 p.m. ET)

#5 Son of a Saint (3-1) is the one to beat after winning his two most recent starts at the $5,000 claiming level. The gray gelding moves up in class with trainer Juan Guerrero, who wins at a 30% rate with horses making their third start off a layoff. Jockey Luis Rivera takes the reins for a third straight race and guided Son of a Saint to a 4 1/4-length victory at a mile and 70 yards on March 16.

The son of Speightstown is 5 3-2-0 lifetime at Parx and has the late speed to finish strong.

#3 The Robert (7-2) could upset the favorite, however, under the guidance of conditioner Michael Pino, a 20% winner in first races off the claim. The dark bay clocked an 82 Brisnet Speed figure with a 96 Late Pace number when finishing second at a mile and 70 yards on March. The seven-year-old gelding most recently won at Parx on Feb. 1, a 5 3/4-length victory at a mile in which he achieved a 90 Brisnet Speed rating.
