Pick 4 play for British Columbia Derby Day at Hastings
The C$150,000 British Columbia Derby (Can-G3) highlights a huge day of racing at Hastings Park on Saturday. The Vancouver, Canada, venue will play host to 10 races in total, with six of the stakes variety.
The late Pick 4 (Races 7-10) offers big fields and talented horses in a challenging, and potentially lucrative, sequence.
Here’s my take:
RACE 7
The British Columbia Oaks attracted 10 sophomore fillies in what is a really nice group. The horses to beat are drawn outside and could be vulnerable with a slow break, but they have to be included, nonetheless.
HERE’S HANNAH (#9) (5-2) is six-for-seven lifetime on this course for conditioner John Morrison. The chestnut lass has early speed and looms large. RAIDER (#10) (7-2) rides in on a four-race win streak and ships over from Northlands. The Greg Tracy pupil has fine local experience and is another must use.
TIPTOE (#3) (8-1) and Emerald Downs import DIAMONDS R (#7) (6-1) are added for insurance.
RACE 8
The British Columbia Derby will feature a dozen in hopes of adding a graded win to their resume. The top pair from the recent Canadian Derby (Can-G3) leads the way.
Robertino Diodoro’s pupil SKY PROMISE (#6) (3-1) has thrived since moving off the turf following a claim in June. The Sky Mesa colt will be tough with his best in hopes of making it two in succession. Runner-up DAY RAIDER (#1) (6-1) may have the best turn of foot in the field. The New Year’s Day gelding has improved since going long and has the coveted rail post.
NOT YET (#2) (12-1) faces a big class hike but was excellent in an allowance romp in advance of today. CANADIAN GAME (#10) (9-2) ships in from Del Mar with Aaron Gryder in the silks. WEEKEND WIZARD (#12) (7-2) is good enough but will have to overcome the widest draw on the tight course.
RACE 9
Another big field awaits in the Jack Diamond Futurity for juveniles at 6 1/2 furlongs. CALL IT A WRAP (#8) (3-1) has a big turn of foot as the one to hold today. The Finality gelding owns a local stakes win and could be a single on some tickets.
I will include two others in STAY FANTASTIC (#2) (4-1) and ARRANGER (#3) (10-1).
RACE 10
This competitive claiming dash concludes the sequence, and I am going to make an aggressive single to close it out.
MORI GIRL (#5) (6-1) finished a subpar fourth against a few of these last time but looks to be of excellent value right back. The Barbara Heads trainee was a good third two prior in a swiftly run race and improvement is fully expected today.
The Jersey Town filly gets a good draw after being widest in her last pair, and she could get an ideal trip from off the pace.
Suggested $1 Pick-4 wager
3,7,9,10 with 1,2,6,10,12 with 2,3,8 with 5 = $60
Good luck!
