Pick 5 Play for Fair Grounds Jan. 22

January 22nd, 2023

With rain coming in overnight, here is an off-the-turf Late Pick 5 for Sunday at Fair Grounds.

It’s a skinny ticket that stays true to my opinions, and if it hits, it’s liable to pay $900 - $2,200 depending on scratches and pool size. Beating the favorites in the first and third leg, while hanging my hat on two likely odds-on singles, should justify expressing my opinion in the Pick 5 pool.

Consider pressing up - meaning betting a bigger base bet than 50 cents.

50-cent Pick 5 = $12

Race 4, Dirt, 6 Furlongs, Clm 5000N2L, 4-year-old & up statebreds

We’ll survive this leg and gather equity by being against the first two logicals.

#1 Chiefweave (6-1), #2 Reverent (5-1), and #7 War Trolley (9-2) have a good chance of winning and will likely be underutilized in the sequence. Chiefweave got beat to the front by an outside speedster and chased on from there before throwing in the towel. He should rebound to past efforts against these. Reverent has speed and is dropping in class - a dangerous combination. War Trolley moved forward nicely last time out and second time versus winners, he should be more comfortable against his foes.

Race 5 Turf (off), About 1 1/16 Miles OC 80k/N2L, 3-year-olds & up fillies and mares

One of two logical singles.

#1A Titled Lady (7-5) is stretching out and if she can run nearly as well as her last outing, she’ll be all set in here.

Race 6, Dirt, 1 Mile, OC 20k/N2X, 4-year-olds & up statebred fillies and mares

Key coupled-entry favorite to beat in this leg.

#5 Alliaceous (5-1) has a nice late kick and fresh legs to use it. Pace could heat up to this one’s benefit. #7 Special Connection (4-1) makes her first start for a new barn and her second start in her form cycle. Faced much tougher last out.

Race 7, Turf (off), About 1 Mile, Md Sp Wt, 50k 3-year-olds & up

One of two logical singles.

Assuming we are off the turf for this one, let’s single #4 Big Commerce (5-1) debuting for Bret Calhoun. This $435,000 son of Justify will be running to win.

Race 8, Dirt, 1 Mile, Md Sp Wt, 50k 3-year-old & up statebreds

Get out with two logicals and two prices.

Corey Lanerie is game to ride #1 Run On Aces (8-1) who could return to earlier form. #5 Our Heatseeker (3-1) stretches out to a distance his half, Martinized, has handled well.  #7 Double On the Red (4-1) runs for the second time off the bench and should be fit as he attempts to return to previous figures which would beat these on most days. #8 Big Boo (8-1) stretches out and could show speed, or at least be forwardly placed. Sprint to route is one of the strongest angles from the Darla Singh barn.
