Pick 6 carryovers: $32,472 at Aqueduct, $948 at Fair Grounds

December 16th, 2023

Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson analyzes a pair of non-jackpot Pick 6 carryovers available to chase on Saturday at Aqueduct and Fair Grounds.

Aqueduct, Race 5: $32,472 Pick 6 carryover (1:46 p.m. ET)

The Saturday card at Aqueduct picked up interest from a betting perspective when the $1 Pick 6 tossed up a $32,472 carryover.

The feature events in the Pick 6 are a pair of rich stakes for two-year-olds who are eligible for the New York Stallion Stakes series. The first is Race 8, the $500,000 New York Stallion Series S. (Fifth Avenue Division) for fillies sprinting seven furlongs.

Among the dozen entrants, one of the most interesting is a filly who has yet to win a race. #7 Book of Wisdom (6-1) has gone 0-for-4 for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, but she’s cracked the trifecta in all four of those starts, and her last three Brisnet Speed ratings are 82, 84, and 84. Those numbers stamp Book of Wisdom among the fastest horses in Saturday’s field, so there’s a decent chance she’ll score her maiden victory in a stakes.

The other stakes is Race 9, the $500,000 New York Stallion Series S. (Great White Way Division) for colts and geldings, also at seven furlongs. We’re keen to support morning line favorite #9 B D Saints (5-2), who overcame a troubled start to rally and finish second in the one-mile Sleepy Hollow S. at Aqueduct last time out. B D Saints gained 6 1/4 lengths through the final furlong alone to finish 1 1/4 lengths behind El Grande O, one of the best New York-bred juveniles in training.

The 92 Brisnet Speed rating B D Saints posted in the Sleepy Hollow is tied for the highest number in Saturday’s field, so we feel B D Saints is a viable single even while facing a full field.

Fair Grounds: $948 Pick 6 carryover (3:45 p.m. ET)

Fair Grounds is getting in on the carryover action with a $948 prize pool up for grabs in the $1 Pick 6.

Two of the trickiest legs are maiden special weights for two-year-olds. Race 7, taking placer over about 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, is a perfect example. Four of the nine entrants in the main body of the field are first-time starters, and the experienced runners aren’t bringing especially compelling form to the table.

Among the debuting youngsters, #2 Sharp Strike (6-1) is arguably the most appealing after turning in a sharp string of workouts at Fair Grounds, including a bullet three furlongs from the starting gate in :35 1/5. Meanwhile, #9 Redeposit (7-2) looks like the best of the experienced runners after finishing third in each of his first two starts on dirt, earning respectable Brisnet Speed ratings of 74 and 81. The son of Omaha Beach has the pedigree to shine while switching to turf, so we recommend using both Sharp Strike and Redeposit.

Race 8, a six-furlong dirt sprint for fillies, features five first-time starters and five experienced runners. Among the latter group, #6 Beelieve Her (7-2) is easily the fastest from a Brisnet Speed rating perspective, having thrown down an 85 when finishing second in her debut over this track and class level at Fair Grounds.

But there are some promising contenders among the debuting runners. #5 Velvet Kisses (9-2) has posted a trio of bullet workouts, including half a mile from the Keeneland starting gate in :47 1/5. #7 Mt. Masada (6-1) has likewise shown speed in the mornings for trainer Tom Amoss, who has gone 3-for-9 (33%) debuting juveniles in dirt sprints at Fair Grounds since 2018. And #8 Liuzza (6-1) is a son of Maximus Mischief, who is siring 22% winners from first-time starters this year. If you have the budget, you might want to spread deep in this leg of the Pick 6.

Good luck!
