Pimlico: How to bet the mandatory-payout $1,435,081 Pick 6 carryover

In case you haven’t heard, Pimlico is set to celebrate the holiday in style. For weeks and weeks, the jackpot carryover for the 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6 has been accumulating, reaching $1,435,081 following the conclusion of Saturday’s card. On Sunday, the entire jackpot will be dispersed across a sequence featuring four stakes, setting the stage for a huge day of racing in which the final Pick 6 pool figures to draw millions in fresh money.

Race 6: $32,000 Starter Optional Claiming (six furlongs, 3:09 p.m. ET)

#1 Tam Char (2-1) obliterated a $40,000 maiden claimer by 9 1/4 lengths over this track and distance last month, but the three-year-old filly is prone to breaking slowly and might not be unbeatable while facing winners for the first time. #2 Hufflepuff (3-1) is a logical alternative, but with an 11-1-5-3 lifetime record, she’s shown a tendency to settle for the minor awards. We’ll throw in the consistent #5 Behind the Couch (5-1) and the lightly raced #8 Brewster Flats (12-1) in hopes of surviving this competitive opening leg of the Pick 6.

Race 7: Jameela S. (five furlongs on turf, 3:46 p.m. ET)

#8 Introduced (8-5) has won a couple of stakes on dirt, but she’s also a capable turf performer, finishing fourth in a strong edition of the six-furlong License Fee S. at Belmont Park two starts back. Introduced is versatile in terms of running style and looks like a deserving favorite, but #9 Paisley Singing (8-1) and #12 Spun Glass (4-1) also have the Brisnet Speed ratings to factor if Introduced misfires.

Race 8: Concern S. (six furlongs, 4:17 p.m. ET)

#1 Mighty Mischief (6-5) has won three straight for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, including the Chick Lang S. (G3) sprinting six furlongs at Pimlico. The front-running son of Into Mischief looms as a logical single.

Race 9: Caesar’s Wish S. (1 1/16 miles, 4:48 p.m. ET)

The graded stakes-placed #7 Mrs. Orb (3-1) recently returned from a layoff to finish third in the Critical Eye H. racing a one-turn mile at Belmont Park. Stretching out around two turns in her second start of the season can trigger a sharp effort, with #8 Landing Zone (5-2) the most likely to challenge.

Race 10: Lite the Fuse S. (six furlongs, 5:19 p.m. ET)

#5 Chateau (9-5) has been facing tougher company on the New York circuit, dominating the Tom Fool H. (G3) before placing fourth in the Carter H. (G1) and second in the Runhappy S. (G3). But we can’t single Chateau—not with 2020 Chick Lang winner #7 Yaupon (7-5) joining the fray. And since both are pure frontrunners, we’ll throw in the stretch-running two-time Pimlico stakes winner #4 Laki (4-1) in case a pace meltdown unfolds.

Race 11: $16,000 Maiden Claiming (five furlongs on turf, 5:50 p.m. ET)

#8 Leave ‘Em Loaded (9-2) and #10 Gleaming Sword (3-1) bring competitive Brisnet Speed ratings to the mix, but they’re both making their turf debuts. We’ll back them up with the class-dropping duo of #6 Hair of the Dog (7-2) and #13 Flash Is Back (15-1) plus the stakes-placed #7 Virginia Fib (12-1), all three proven performers on turf.
