Pimlico track update for May 11
Saturday at Pimlico features the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness S. (G1).
However, the entire week features competitive racing, including stakes in a full range of divisions. Pimlico has been running for a couple weeks, longer than usual leading into the Preakness, so let's learn about major local players!
Jockeys
Heading into this week, Carol Cedeno (13 wins from 40 starts, 33%) and Charlie Marquez (13 wins from 64 starts, 20%) lead the win column at Pimlico. Cedeno leads all riders in both win percentage and in-the-money rate (68%), so she is getting live mounts and making the most of them.

On grass, Charlie Marquez has started hot. In seven turf races, he has three wins and three seconds. Only Jevian Toledo (two wins, five starts) also has more than one turf win.
Trainers
Kieron Magee leads the win standings, with nine in just 19 starts. Second in wins and a clear leader in purse money is Claudio Gonzalez, with seven victories from 40 starts, and another 20 in-the-money finishes. With $384,871 in earnings, Gonzalez is about $210,000 clear of second-place Hugh McMahon, who has six wins from 26 starts and has 15 in-the-money finishes.
Gonzalez is also undefeated in two starts on the lawn. The only other trainer with more than one turf win is McMahon, who has two, and a third-place finish, from four grass starts.
Post positions
Inside posts rule the dirt. In sprint races at Pimlico this year, 66% have been won from the first four posts, including 16 from the post 2 (25%) and 13 from gate 4 (20%). In 41 route races, posts 1 through 4 have won 73% of the races.
Early returns are good on the Pimlico grass, too. In 10 turf races, two winners have broke from the rail and three from post 2.
