The first leg of the opening day pick-4 at Del Mar on Thursday is a doozy. It’s a 10 horse field of starter allowance runners going one mile on the main polytrack. Be sure to see how the track is playing until that point, but keep in mind that it can change as the day goes on. On a fair track, NO BARNEYS may just be the one to bet. Yes, he is coming off a maiden win, but he looks like lone speed and can get brave on the front end if left alone. MAXX THE GIANT looks like the trip horse from just off the pace if he can save ground from post 10. The only two horses in the field with a win over a synthetic surface are JACKSON SUNDOWN, who won over the Tapeta at Golden Gate, and ROMAR SUCCESS, who won at Hollywood Park way back in 2012. ROMAR SUCCESS is trained by Leonard Powell, who had an excellent meet at Del Mar last year. KNOW PLANS runs for trainer Barry Abrams and Abrams has always had success where the turf meets the surf. Look for KNOW PLANS to run on late and should be used in any trifecta or superfecta wager.
