Player Quick Pick: Del Mar for 7/25/14

July 25th, 2014

Del Mar 7 | 10:00 pm ET G3 Cougar II for 3yo&up going 1-1/2 mi

The Friday feature at Del Mar is the three-turn Cougar II Handicap, which is now a field of eight after the scratching of American Blend, Big John B and Soi Phet. SKY KINGDOM is the 5-2 morning line favorite, but his zero-for-four mark at Del Mar doesn’t exactly give him a ringing endorsement. He was second in the race last year, beaten just a half length by course specialist Richard’s Kid. SKY KINGDOM is a front-runner and he may have company with ICE CREAM TRUCK likely to press the pace. If that long shot does not go, SKY KINGDOM may just waltz gate to wire. Yesterday we scored with a horse that was a classic ““may have needed a start” and we have two of those in the Cougar. LIDERIS finished fifth in the Grade 1 Gold Cup last month, his first start off a three month layoff and first start outside of Peru. He drew the rail and the inside has been the place to be this summer. LIDERIS is worth a bet at likely long odds. OLD TIME HOCKEY makes his synthetic debut, but his turf form gives hope he can handle the surface switch. He will be mid-pack and gets a positive rider switch from Drayden Van Dyke to Joe Talamo. Must use in any pick-4 wager.
