Player Quick Pick: Saratoga Late Pick Four for 8/25/14

August 25th, 2014

By Andrew Champagne

Monday's Pick Four sequence got much more complicated with the scratch of my best bet of the day. Zamquick would have been extremely tough to beat in the opening leg, and when that one scratched, the ticket became a real head-scratcher. Here's how I'll play it.

RACE #7: With no Zamquick around, I narrowed this down to two horses. I'm using #6 Benny's Bullet (4-1) and #8 Dattts Da Boss (6-1).

Benny's Bullet becomes my top pick. Her last start at a mile is a throw-out, as that's probably much further than she wants to go. Her starts at six and seven furlongs haven't been bad, and she drops back in for a tag after running in starter allowance company.

RACE #8: The first of two extremely difficult legs is this one, a two-turn maiden race on turf for older fillies and mares. I'm going five-deep, using #1 Traipse in Utopia (5-1), #2 Piccolo Flats (7/2), #9 Rose Quartz (10-1), #10 Maura's Pass (3-1), and #11 Lil' Zilla (6-1).

Maura's Pass is my top pick. Her turf debut off a layoff wasn't bad, as she ran fourth behind a next-out winner. The post stinks, but if she gets a pace to run at and some logical improvement comes along, she probably wins.

RACE #9: This is another really difficult leg. It's the Smart N Fancy Stakes, a turf sprint for older fillies and mares, and I've again gone five-deep. #3 To My Valentine (4-1), #6 Goldstryke Glory (12-1), #8 Free as a Bird (5/2), #9 Stars Above Me (6-1), and #11 Madame Giry (5-1) are all on my ticket.

Good luck trying to pick a winner here. In fact, I think the longshot of my group has a big-time chance. Goldstryke Glory has been running very well at Woodbine, and Woodbine shippers have run some big races at Saratoga this meet. She's got a ton of speed, and her usual rider travels across the border for this one, so I wouldn't be surprised if she springs the upset.

RACE #10: We end with another turf race, the fourth of the sequence. I'm going three-deep in this maiden claimer, using #1 Miss Motivation (7/2), #10 Lutheran Miss (4-1), and #11 Taramislew (12-1).

Lutheran Miss tried turf for the first time last out and ran fourth against straight maidens. That was probably shorter than she wanted to go, and her breeding (which includes Kingmambo on top and Smart Strike on the bottom) indicates she wants two turns. This is a class drop for her, and she caught a pretty weak field.

This isn't a cheap ticket at all. It works out to a $75 wager, and that's more expensive than I wanted to give out. However, this is a really tough sequence, and if you play it, best of luck!
