Power Plays Perform; Winners Stack Firmly Across The Board

We were correct about beating Wiggle It Jiggleit at Dover in the $30k Preferred Handicap and we mentioned the probable pacers that could defeat him. Of the two, the winner was Bettor Memories, though we backed Quality Bud ($4.40).

Our special feature Wallyworld, which is a campaign to beat popular driver Wally Hennessey’s drives in any Pompano event, produced only a single show return in five races. Hennessey drove three winners, all mega-favorites with awful returns.

Our show payoff went to Starcasim ($6.80) and our others offered huge prices, though they finished off the board. Sports Analyst (33-1) was fourth; Royal Rex (14-1) was seventh; Ugottobeinittowinit (50-1) was eighth; and Asiago Romano (91-1) was last.


Friday, Jan. 17

Four features at the Meadows presented multi-cashing results. Though we were one horse short of hitting the Pick 4, we nailed the inner Pick 3. It began with Carolina Beach ($4.80, $3.00, $2.80), continued with Avalanche Hanover ($13.80, $6.20, $4.20) and concluded with Razor’s Edge ($3.40, $2.60, $2.20).

Left out of the mix in the Pick 3 were leg two’s Phantom Seelster (8-5), finishing eighth, Cindys Party Boy (32-1), finishing ninth, and leg three’s Hurrikane Kingklee (71-1).

The last leg of the Pick 4 was won by the race favorite, while were off the board with Beach House (9-1), BBs Harley (6-1) and Jumpin Jake Flash (27-1).

The 50-cent Pick 3 paid $19.40. Our three-for-four Pick 4, adding the winning favorite, paid $54.75. 


Saturday, Jan. 18

Our features were to come from Ohio but Northfield cancelled the program due to Winter Storm Jacob.

The PoP Pick-3 stream suggested contenders have been noted; some or all may appear in a feature or the H2W next week.



H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 39 active horses (a 23-percent win hit rate and a 46-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate).

News & Notes

Horses begin arriving on the Buffalo Raceay grounds on Jan. 19 in preparation for a 66-program harness-racing campaign. Trotting and pacing events start on Wednesday evening, Jan. 29 at 5:00 p.m. Saturday nights will have a 6:00 p.m. post. Action on Fridays will return on April 3 with a 5:00 p.m. post.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission approved purse distributions for the 2020 Kentucky Sire Stakes (KYSS). The KYSS is open to two- and three-year-old trotters and pacers. The Championship Series consists of three legs with a guaranteed purse of $40,000 and a final purse of $250,000. The Commonwealth Series consists of two legs with guaranteed purses of $20,000 and a final purse of $50,000. Horses must declare a series before the second leg of the Championship Series and the first leg of Commonwealth Series. Once declared, a horse must stay in that series.

California harness correspondent Mark Ratzky tells us that at the current Cal-Expo harness meet there are two wagers offered each night on racing programs that come with a reduced 16-percent takeout rate — the 20-cent Pick 5 on the first five events and the 20-cent Pick 4. The Pick-4 comes with a $40,000 guaranteed gross pool on Saturdays and a $30,000 guarantee on Fridays.
