Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Wednesday, July 24, 2024

Dick Powell explains his selections for Wednesday’s card at Presque Isle Downs.

Race One:

1st: (6) MAGIC LIFE – returned off the long layoff with a sharp third after setting the pace, then she came back with an even third. She should be ready for a best effort in her third start off the layoff for Louis Ruberto. 

2nd: (2) I’M HEADING EAST – chased the pace behind a repeat winner two starts back off a long layoff, then she rallied for third after being shuffled back from post one. Ed Rojas wins 26% with his overall claimers.  

3rd: (5) ORPHAN EXCHANGE – romped by over eight lengths two starts back against similar company. 

Race Two:

1st: (4) HENRY’S WORLD – horse for the course won by over six lengths when he went gate to wire, then he was run down late as the odds-on favorite in his first start off the claim by Ed Rojas, who wins 29% first start after being beaten as the favorite. 

2nd: (1) RESIST THE DEVIL – horse for the course rallied from off the pace two starts back, then he won going away when dropped down to this class level. Kevin Rice wins 16% with his overall claimers and Dereck Lopez rides back. 

3rd: (7) TAPSOLUTION – drops down in class off some even efforts here for Scooter Davis. 

Race Three:

1st: (3) LITTLE MISS MUNNY – was a good third in her PID debut, then came back with a good second. She was beaten five lengths against males last out and now returns to female company for Henry Miller. 

2nd: (6) ROZAY SUMMER – tries Tapeta for the first time. She’s been off the board in all three career starts and shows up here for Kevin Rice, who wins 29% third start off the layoff and 18% first start out of his barn. 

3rd: (5) BEADS – ran well on the Tapeta at Golden Gate last year for Mike McCarthy. 

Race Four:

1st: (7) MISCHIEF WARRIOR – ran twice on the turf to begin this season, then was a good third here against this class level for Tim Girten, who wins 37% first start after being beaten as the favorite. Pablo Morales rides back – 35% with Girten. 

2nd: (5) PHOBIA – took him 18 starts to finally break his maiden but he came back against tougher company. Now, he drops down to the right level against winners for Kevin Rice, who wins 24% with this dropdown. 

3rd: (4) SEA URCHIN – finally dropped down to the right maiden level and won by over eight lengths last out. 

Race Five:

1st: (6) NICOLE’S WILL – first-time starter from Lance Stokes, who wins 21% against this maiden level. Son of good young sire War of Will is training bullets here including a gate workout last week.

2nd: (3) OL’ NELSON – was used hard from post one before tiring in his career debut at long odds. He comes back on short rest for Louis Ruberto, who wins 11% with his synthetic-track starters. Dam has produced four winners from six foals to race. 

3rd: (8) HIGHS N LOWS – gunned to the front before tiring in his career debut for Kevin Rice, who wins 19% second time out. 

Race Six:

1st: (7) CITY LEADER – has had three starts here without getting into the money but his last start was decent when dropped down to this class level. Ron Potts wins 20% with his synthetic-track starters and 17% going long. 

2nd: (8) SON OF LIBERTY – ran pretty well last year on the turf against better company. He showed some speed for six furlongs on the turf at Monmouth Park last out off the long layoff. Pablo Morales rides.  

3rd: (4) SNIP THE ROSES – took him 18 starts to break his maiden, then came back with two even efforts against this level. 

Race Seven:

1st: (7) CROWNED JEWEL – held well for third in his Tapeta debut here, then ran about the same race after setting a slow pace. He was a well-beaten second last out in fast time for Teresa Connelly, who wins 13% with his synthetic-track starters. 

2nd: (5) CHANGE THE HOUR – broke his maiden in his 16th try and comes back against modest winners for Randy Russell, who wins 17% first start after a maiden win. Gaddiel Martinez returns – 28% riding for Russell. 

3rd: (6) VERY DEBONAIRE – has finished in the money in all four starts here this year against this level. 

Race Eight:

1st: (9) HOPE SHE COMES – still winless after 11 tries here. She finally dropped down to this maiden claiming level for the first time and missed by a head after chasing the pace. Justin Morrell wins 11% with his sprinters and synthetic-track starters.  

2nd: (7) SHACKLED BY LUST – has run well in all three career starts on Tapeta. She showed good speed in both starts here this season for Scooter Davis, who wins 26% with his synthetic-track starters and 23% with his sprinters. 

3rd: (3) NEXT DOT – just missed against this maiden claiming level two starts back, then ran well when moved up in class.
