Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Oct. 27

October 27th, 2022

Dick Powell offers his picks and analysis for the Thursday racing card at Presque Isle Downs.

Race One:

1st: #1 DR. HYDE – improved a lot when going a mile but was never able to graduate so now he drops down to six furlongs and tries maiden claimers for the first time. Keith Dickey wins 17% when he rides Alberto Burgos.

2nd: #11 GOOSE HUNTER – held on for second two starts back here in his first start for Kevin Rice then rallied from just off the pace last out when moved up in class. Rice wins 17% with his overall maiden claimers, and they show a flat-bet profit.

3rd: #6 FAST MULE – ran a big race in her start and can beat these if she can repeat that effort.

Race Two:

1st: #4 INCLUSIVE – winless in 13 starts here but has four seconds and four thirds over the years. One-dimensional closer rallied for third two starts back then rallied wide from post 11 last out to miss by a length and a half.

2nd: #2 BAHAMIAN PARK – won going 6 1/2 furlongs earlier in the summer and now stretches out to two turns. He has run well at this distance before and has faced this level far too many times. Addiel Ayala rides back.

3rd: #8 GOODTIME ARTIE – took him a long time to get going but has been in great form in his last three starts here.

Race Three:

1st: #4 VACCINA – broke her maiden by over five lengths three starts back then held on for third after setting the pace. She was cooked in a suicidal pace duel last out but can take this group down the road for Gaddiel Martinez.

2nd: #5 ANOINT – broke her maiden first time out here two years ago then went back the next two starts against stakes foes. Off since then, she rallied for second last out in a game effort for Keri Brion, who wins 18% second off the layoff.

3rd: #2 QUARTERFLASH – ran well in her last two starts as the beaten favorite after being claimed by Tim Girten.

Race Four:

1st: #1 MERINO WOOL – dropped down to this claiming level and beat them twice before moving up to this level and winning easily. Ed Rojas wins 28% of first starts after a win, and Merino Wool draws the rail with Pablo Morales.

2nd: #3 CHARLOTTE THE BRIT – dropped to the bottom and was an even fourth in fast time. Claimed that day by Ed Rojas, she raced evenly when moved way up in class then held for third going two turns.

3rd: #2 TUDOX RUE MAJESTIC – speedball won two in a row going two turns then tired badly last out after a poor start.

Race Five:

1st: #2 KITTEN BY THE SEA – ran pretty well in her Tapeta debut here two starts back then just missed going two turns on the turf at Mountaineer Park. Daughter of Kitten’s Joy returns here going six furlongs for Don Blankenship.

2nd: #10 BROOKLYNS SURPRISE – has run well here over the years against better company. She ran well against open company allowance foes then dropped down to this claiming level and rallied for second as the 7-5 favorite.

3rd: #3 LETS RACE LADYS – missed hanging on by a head two starts back then chased a fast pace last out before tiring.

Race Six:

1st: #6 BANDITOFTHEPRAIRIE – won his first two starts here on the Tapeta then raced evenly when moved up in class. He was no match last out so he drops down again for Cassondra Weaver, who wins 25% with her synthetic-track starters.

2nd: #2 SMOKEY LEE – horse for the course has won two of his last three starts here and should be tough again from an inside post. Son of Brody’s Cause wins 25% going long to short for Kevin Fletcher. Eddie Dominguez rides back.

3rd: #7 CHOCOLATE PHILLING – horse for the course beat better two starts back then chased a slow pace last out.

Race Seven:

1st: #9 SWEET AS SUGAR – woke up on the dirt at Finger Lakes winning two races by 13 lengths then raced evenly in her next two starts. She ran third here before so should be able to handle the move back for Jeremiah Englehart.

2nd: #1 NEW WAYS TO DREAM – beat one level better two starts back here then lost all chance last out after a clumsy start. Matt Kintz wins 20% with his synthetic-track starters and 18% with his claiming starters.

3rd: #7 BODE BY YOU – daughter of Munnings moves up in class after beating cheaper here 10 days ago.

Race Eight:

1st: #6 SPIRITED SOL – horse for the course was a sharp winner here two starts back in fast time then was an even third against these in even faster time. He should be able to work out a stalking trip from here with Erin Walker.

2nd: #4 RESIST THE DEVIL – rallied for third going 6 1/2 furlongs in very fast time two starts back after being shuffled back from post one, then beat allowance foes last out for Kevin Rice, who wins 16% with his synthetic-track starters.

3rd: #3 COMMODORE BARRY – ran well against state-bred company in his last two starts.

Race Nine:

1st: #8 CANADIAN GAME – just missed two starts back behind a repeat winner then weakened later as the 3-2 favorite when the gelded son of Curlin came up empty. Bill Martin wins 23% of first starts after being beaten as the favorite.

2nd: #6 K. K. ICHIKAWA – one-dimensional closer dropped down to this claiming level and rallied from far back to get third. He was a good third last out when stuck behind a slow pace for Mike LeCesse, who wins 14% with his claiming starters.

3rd: #1 LAKE NAKURU – could not overcome post 12 three starts back then just missed last out when he stalked the pace.
