Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Aug. 15

Race 1:

1st: #4 FLOAT AWAY – tired in her career debut then ran better in a much faster race. She stretches out to two turns while dropping down in class for John Bourke. First-time Lasix should help, and she has enough pedigree.

2nd: #6 MACRELLETTA – surged to the lead before weakening against this class and distance two starts back then raced evenly going six furlongs. She goes back to two turns for Ed Rojas, who wins 32% going short to long.

3rd: #5 DAKOTA DANCER – did nothing in her first three career starts then improved some going two turns at Finger Lakes.

Race 2:

1st: #4 EAGLES PALACE – took him 18 tries to finally break his maiden then he showed good speed before weakening. Last out, he was able to win from post 10 and returns from a better post with Erin Walker back aboard.

2nd: #1 JACKSON STRONG – speedball breaking from the rail with Pablo Morales just missed against this claiming level the last two times he faced them. Morales rarely rides for Nelson Figueroa so he must be confident of his fitness.

3rd: #5 MUTASHABEH – winless in five starts here, but all but the last came against better company.

Race 3:

1st: #2 A COTSWOLD VILLAGE – horse for the course has four wins in his 10 starts here and was in the money in his six other starts. He tired late after leading to the deep stretch last out going long and draws well with Willie Martinez.

2nd: #5 PEMAQUID PETE – beat bottom-level claimers by over seven lengths two starts back then battled for the lead before getting outfinished going a two-turn mile in very fast time. He drops down in class and needs clever handling from Mike Allen.

3rd: #4 WILE E PEYOTE – has won on synthetic tracks before and makes his Presque Isle debut for Jay Bernardini.

Race 4:

1st: #5 K’S LITTLE BILL – went gate-to-wire against these three starts back then he missed by a length in his last two starts. Horse for the course usually does his best racing when stalking the pace. Bill Martin wins 25% of first starts after being beaten as the favorite.

2nd: #3 RUMPOLE – raced on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs this winter then made his Presque Isle debut last out and showed good speed for a half-mile. Maria Bowersock wins 14% with her overall claimers and 11% of second starts off the layoff.

3rd: #4 MAKES GOOD SENSE – speedy nine-year-old drops down in class, which he beat the last time he faced them.

Race 5:

1st: #7 CONCRETE GLORY – was a game second here two starts back against similar state-breds in very fast time, then went to Penn National and tired after disputing a very fast pace against stakes company.

2nd: #8 PURE SPRING – is only 1-for-21 here, but he has numerous placings against this allowance level. He missed by a length two starts back, then tired going two turns when outkicked in a very slow-paced race.

3rd: #6 FOLTYNEWICZ – returned to the races with two poor efforts but is always dangerous if he makes the lead.

Race 6:

1st: #6 CARAMEL MARTINI – horse for the course was an even third three starts back, then did not threaten in a race where the first three finishers won their next start. She rallied some last out for Lance Stokes, who wins 22% with his allowance runners.

2nd: #5 MA DE TAW – rallied from far back to win a turf sprint at Parx Racing, then was shuffled back into traffic from post 1 in a turf sprint at Laurel. Scott Spieth picks up the ride — 17% with his sprinters.

3rd: #1 PROPOSITION – finished up last year with four wins in a row, then won second time out this year. Last start was puzzling.

Race 7:

1st: #4 DYNASTY OF HER OWN – was soundly beaten against graded stakes foes, so this is a drop in class. She won 10 of 12 starts on the Tapeta at Golden Gate and was third on the dirt at Santa Anita in a Grade 3 race.

2nd: #7 TACTICAL PAJAMAS – horse for the course romped going six furlongs in fast time, then won a state-bred stakes here last out going two turns and now drops back to a sprint against open company. Ron Potts wins 18% of first starts after a win.

3rd: #8 CLUB CAR – does not have a rider named at entry time, but she has plenty of back class.

Race 8:

1st: #4 OLDZFOURFORTYTWO – beat better two starts back in decent time, then tired late in a long sprint against better. He drops down to bottom claimers for Leland Hayes, who wins 21% with his sprinters and 22% with his synthetic-track starters.

2nd: #8 I BELONG TO BECKY – went gate to wire against similar company two starts back, then tired when moved up in class. He should be fit to go in his third start off the 14-month layoff and has plenty of back class.

3rd: #7 ANOTHER SOFTBALL – doesn’t win as much as you would like, but fits here to get into the gimmicks.
