Race One:
1st: #5 RUMPOLE (7-2) – returns to the races off a 118-day layoff for Maria Bowersock, who claimed him for $8K two starts back on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs. The eight-year-old gelding drops down to a class level that he beat the last two times he faced them.
2nd: #2 K’S LITTLE BILL (5-2) – was a good second two starts back here in his first start off the long layoff. He went gate to wire last out and meets the same group with only two pounds more. Trainer Bill Martin wins 22% first start after a win and 33% with Pablo Morales.
3rd: #1 CHARLIE CHARLIE (3-1) – was a sharp winner two starts back off the long layoff then just missed last out.
Race Two:
1st: #4 SWEET MOOCHIE (2-1) – was claimed for $10K at Tampa Bay Downs and was wisely spotted in two allowance races here. Now, she drops way down in class for trainer Lisa Allen who wins 10% with her jockey husband Mike Allen and 8% with her synthetic-track starters.
2nd: #6 SONG OF INDY (5-2) – horse for the course finished up last year with a sharp win going two turns. She returned here with a good third going six furlongs then tired last out going long. She drops in class and gets Addiel Ayala back aboard.
3rd: #5 NOT ORBINARY (5-1) – didn’t show much last out in her first start in five months but drops in class.
Race Three:
1st: #4 KOTYLOS (8-1) – first-time starter from Randy Russell who wins 18% with his maiden special weight starters. The son of Kantharos (15% debut winners) is out of a stakes-placed dam by Concerto (14% debut runners) that has produced two winners from three foals to race.
2nd: #3 DONTINVADEMYSPACE (5-2) – showed some speed here in two starts and adds blinkers for the first time. He shows a bullet workout from the gate here five days ago and gets Antonio Gallardo back aboard – 4-for-12 riding for Gerry Brooks.
3rd: #2 COLONEL POPPY (2-1) – rallied for second in his well-bet career debut for Matt Kintz going this distance.
Race Four:
1st: #4 GIO’S MY DAD (9-2) – added Lasix last out and showed speed going two turns for the first time. She turns back to a sprint for Lisa and Mike Allen, the latter of whom wins 12% with his sprint rides and they show a minor flat-bet profit.
2nd: #2 STAR OF SHANGHAI (8-5) – still a maiden after 15 tries. Off for 15 months, she returned with three decent efforts and is now showing gate speed that wasn’t there before. Shanghai Bobby’s offspring do extremely well here.
3rd: #3 TUNED UP (5-2) – was beaten soundly in her three career starts but now drops way down in class while adding blinkers.
Race Five:
1st: #1 OVER IT (5-2) – dropped down to this class level two starts back and raced evenly as the even-money favorite. He ran well when moved up in class off the claim and now drops back down to the right level with Gallardo back aboard.
2nd: #7 KOOSMAN (7-2) – moved up in class off the claim here last out but lost all chance when bumped at the start. He drops back down to the price he was claimed for by Tim Girten, who wins 20% with this move. Pablo Morales wins 43% riding for Girten.
3rd: #6 LEGIO (9-2) – was a good third at long odds two starts back here against this class level.
Race Six:
1st: #7 MORETHANSOULTITLE (7-2) – just missed when dropped down to this claiming level three starts back then raced evenly. He came back at six furlongs and his late rally fell just short so Girten stretches him out to two turns.
2nd: #2 YADI (5-2) – ran well against better going two turns to begin this season. He showed good speed last out on the turf at Mountaineer Park only six days ago. The son of Verrazano drops down in class for Ron Potts, who wins 21% in this spot.
3rd: #1 CAKE AND EAT IT TO (12-1) – ran well at the end of last year on the dirt but is having trouble regaining that form here.
Race Seven:
1st: #5 DIGITAL FOOTPRINT (5-2) – had three sprint preps to begin the year here then stretched out to two turns and was an even third against first-level allowance foes. Blinkers are removed from the son of Giant’s Causeway. Trainer Matt Kintz wins 25% going long.
2nd: #3 THE QUEENS JULES (9-5) – this gelded son of Scat Daddy has only tried a synthetic track once, and he won on it. Today is his Tapeta debut and he ships in from Churchill Downs, where he has been sprinting on the dirt.
3rd: #4 STARSHIP EMPIRE (6-1) – horse for the course has three wins and four seconds here in eight tries and keeps improving.
Race Eight:
1st: #5 FUEL THE BERN (5-2) – still winless in 13 tries here but he has five placings and has run fast speed ratings over it. The son of Bernardini has had three sprint preps against better and now drops in class while stretching out to two turns.
2nd: #6 COOPER’S CRESCENT (3-1) – horse for the course threw in the towel last out here going two turns, but it was a very fast race and he has enough back class to merit another try. Katy Cheeks wins 16% with her overall claimers and 17% on synthetic tracks.
3rd: #2 BOOMIN GOOSE (5-1) – has won 10 times here over the years and draws well where his natural speed should help get a trip.
