Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Monday, June 26, 2023
Dick Powell sifts the top contenders throughout Monday's Presque Isle Downs program.
Race 1
1st: (#1) PRETTY FLATTERING – raced on the dirt over the winter at Tampa Bay Downs with decent results. She shipped here four weeks ago, and her wide rally missed by a nose. Ron Allen Jr. rides back from post 1.
2nd: (#2) INVESTMENT INCOME – turf filly by Candy Ride has plenty of back class and a strong late kick. She dropped down to this level last out and was fourth as the beaten favorite behind the top choice.
3rd: (#6) STORMIN MELLY – won her career debut here, then chased the field when moved up to this level.
Race 2
1st: (#4) RECKLESS AFFAIR – still a maiden after nine tries, but he made his Tapeta debut here last out as the even-money favorite and held well for second when dropped down to this level. Tim Girten wins 39% first start after being beaten as the favorite.
2nd: (#3) YARDMAN – did nothing in his career debut on a wet dirt track at Delaware Park last October. He showed up here on May 30 and rallied for third when dropped down to this maiden claiming level for Maria Bowersock and adds Lasix today.
3rd: (#5) MOCA MONSTER – winless in 11 tries here but was a good second against this level two starts back.
Race 3
1st: (#4) ENJOY THE MUSIC – horse for the course is 10-for-15 here with four placings. He won both starts here against this starter allowance level and will continue to win until something changes. Larry Rivelli wins 35% with his synthetic-track starters.
2nd: (#2) GRAINGER COUNTY – made his PID debut two starts back and missed by a length, then came back to do it again behind the top choice. He has a big closing kick and will need a fast pace to take advantage.
3rd: (#1) TAPSOLUTION – finished third in his last two starts behind the top two.
Race 4
1st: (#5) QUEEN WIGGY – returned off a five-month layoff with a sharp win against state-bred allowance foes, then tired last out against this claiming level as the 9-5 favorite when Lasix was added for the first time.
2nd: (#6) ETTAPLACE – just missed against this claiming level two starts back in her first start in eight months. She ran poorly last out when shuffled back from post 1 and forced to rally wide. Scott Spieth rides back for Aldana – 27%.
3rd: (#7) BETTER CALL MAMA – raced evenly in her Tapeta debut off the layoff, then just missed in a turf sprint at Pimlico.
Race 5
1st: (#2) SHE’D RATHER DANCE – was beaten 43 lengths in her first three career starts, but shipped here from Arizona and was an even third against better. She showed high speed before tiring last out and now drops down another class level.
2nd: (#9) ANA L – raced evenly against maiden special weight company to begin her career. She dropped down in class last out and was a good second. Katy Cheeks wins 26% with her overall maiden claimers, and Martina Rojas is back aboard.
3rd: (#1) OPHAN EXCHANGE – showed some pace in her well-bet career debut and drops in class while adding blinkers.
Race 6
1st: (#5) CANTSTEALMYTHUNDER – showed high speed right from the gate going two turns in his career debut here at 29-1. The son of Dialed In returns against the same maiden group for Kevin Rice and picks up Addiel Ayala.
2nd: (#7) E MINOR – has three turf starts to begin his career at Tampa Bay Downs, and the best was two starts back going a mile in fast time when Lasix was added. Tim Hamm wins 22% going from turf to synthetic.
3rd: (#1) R ADMIRAL – still a maiden after 10 tries, but has six placings and usually shows good speed away from the gate.
Race 7
1st: (#6) FRANZ JOSEF – horse for the course showed high speed on the turf at Tampa Bay Downs this winter, then shipped here and won from just off the pace going six furlongs in fast time. Glenn Wismer wins 23% first start after a win.
2nd: (#4) HEIRLOOM KITTEN – horse for the course was claimed for $12,500 at Keeneland and missed by a head when moved up in class here. Son of Kitten’s Joy got up by a head last out for Girten who gets Morales back – 4-for-9 together.
3rd: (#1) ALABAMA SLAMMER – winless here in six tries, but most came against better company.
Race 8
1st: (#8) SONG OF INDY – finished up last season with a good win as the 17-10 favorite. Horse for the course returned three weeks ago, and her rally fell a head short after battling through the stretch. Mike Rogers wins 26% first start after being beaten as the favorite.
2nd: (#9) SO MOXIE – horse for course just missed here two starts back in her seasonal debut, then raced evenly last out. She drops down to the bottom for Carol Skawinski, who wins 16% with her sprint starters.
3rd: (#1) PEEP’S DAY – rallied furiously to just miss two starts back here against better.
