Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Monday, Sept. 4, 2023
Dick Powell offers his selections and analysis for Monday's card at Presque Isle Downs.
Race One:
1st: (3) BEAST BUNNY – broke her maiden in her seventh try pulling away easily then came back against this conditioned claiming level and showed good speed to the deep stretch. Erin Walker rides back — 28% with Mike Pappada.
2nd: (7) SOUPER SLEWS CASH – kept dropping down looking for class relief until she broke her maiden against bottom claimers. Claimed that day by Ron Potts, she moves up a bit in class and gets in light again with Martina Rojas.
3rd: (6) IRISH VICTORY – was beaten 33 lengths in her first two career starts then went gate to wire here to break her maiden.
Race Two:
1st: (3) FLAT BUSTED – still a maiden after 19 tries, but he just missed here in decent time two starts back then showed good speed last out. Even with all the losses on his card, he looks like he’s improving with each start.
2nd: (5) UPTOWNJACOB BROWN – didn’t run bad in his Tapeta debut here two starts back then did nothing in a wide trip on the turf at Penn National against better. He drops down to the bottom for Alisa Sarson and gets Rojas again.
3rd: (1) COMMANDING – could be dangerous from the rail if he can make the lead as the lone speed.
Race Three:
1st: (1) JUANSEN – first-time starter from Henry Miller, who is 0-for-5 with debut runners. Son of Uncle Lino (18% with his debut runners) is out of a dam by Fusaichi Pegasus and draws the rail with Erin Walker.
2nd: (5) MAJESTIC FLAG – has three seconds in seven tries and makes his Tapeta debut. He is by multiple Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow out of a stakes-producing dam that has produced four winners from four other foals to race.
3rd: (7) PATIENCE WORTH – ran well in her last two starts on the turf and tries Tapeta for the first time.
Race Four:
1st: (3) T C GREELEY – beat better two races in a row when he went gate to wire. He tired after a half-mile next out then battled for the lead to the final yards. Son of Twirling Candy drops back to five furlongs with Gaddiel Martinez.
2nd: (6) HENRY’S WORLD – just missed two starts back against this claiming level in fast time then moved up in class and held well. He drops in distance for Maria Bowersock, who wins 23% with this move and 14% with her synthetic-track starters.
3rd: (4) GENIUS – has a chance to hang around for a piece at long odds for Carl Deville.
Race Five:
1st: (7) ARGYLL – horse for the course dropped down in class two starts back and raced evenly when chasing from post one. He was a decent winner last out when he stalked the pace. Erin Walker rides back — flat-bet profit on synthetic tracks.
2nd: (9) CITY TRIPPER – was soundly beaten two starts in a row when blinkers were added. Last out with Lasix added, he was a good winner going 6 1/2 furlongs when he stalked the pace. He has enough gate speed to overcome the wide draw.
3rd: (2) THE FIVE B’S – makes his Tapeta debut off a good second for Carl Deville, who wins 16% after losing as the favorite.
Race Six:
1st: (7) SEMINARIAN – was a game second going this distance at 16-1 when making his career debut. Son of Catholic Boy is a half-brother to a stakes winner. Mike LeCesse wins 10% with his overall maiden special weight starters.
2nd: (9) CALLER – made a big, middle move before weakening at 5 1/2 furlongs in his well-bet career debut. Son of Dialed In stretches out to two turns for Eoin Harty, who wins 15% first time going long.
3rd: (5) MORTAL SIN – ran evenly in his first two starts on the turf then was a good third here in his Tapeta debut.
Race Seven:
1st: (2) ZIP CODE ENVY – not a horse for the course but has run well seven of eight starts here. Since adding blinkers, the son of California Chrome raced evenly her last two starts. Ron Allen Jr. rides back.
2nd: (4) CAROLINA SUN – turf sprinter tries Tapeta for the first time. She was a good second going 5 1/2 furlongs at Colonial Downs then made no impression last out. Tim Girten wins 26% with his allowance runners.
3rd: (5) GOLDEN ISLE – won six times on the Tapeta at Gulfstream. She was only beaten a length last out here in her Presque Isle debut.
Race Eight:
1st: (6) VOORHEES – broke his maiden here back in May then had a pair of seconds in his next four starts. Tim Hamm wins 21% with his overall claimers and 20% with his synthetic-track starters. Needs a fast pace for his decent late kick.
2nd: (1) DONTINVADEMYSPACE – is winless here in four tries then was a decent second last out on the dirt at Timonium. Son of Social Inclusion has decent gate speed, and Martina Rojas rides back — 26% riding for Gerry Brooks.
3rd: (3) TWELVETWO – improved with a good third two starts back then broke his maiden by a neck last out here.
