Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Oct. 10
Race One:
1st: #5 MISS CALIFORNIA – dropped down to this conditioned claiming level two starts back and was a distant third. Daughter of California Chrome came back and rallied for second last out for John Guciardo, who wins 27% of third starts off the layoff.
2nd: #4 FORGOT PASSWORD – broke her maiden back in March on the Tapeta going two turns. Off for almost six months, she raced wide on the dirt at Churchill Downs and now goes back to synthetic for Steve Lyster, who wins 23% with his claimers.
3rd: #3 SIGN AND SEAL – took her 14 tries before she could break her maiden and did it by over five lengths.
Race Two:
1st: #3 ARGYLL – improved in his last two starts in turf sprints at Colonial Downs, where he showed better gate speed. Mike Stidham wins 29% when dropping down two or more class levels and goes with Antonio Gallardo.
2nd: #6 MY TWO AUNT JOANS – raced evenly here in his career debut against top maidens so now he drops down to low-level maiden claimers for Tim Hamm, who wins 13% with his second-time starters. Since then, he has trained well here and gets Alberto Burgos.
3rd: #5 ROGERS GINGER – drops to his lowest maiden claiming level yet but has been showing good speed lately.
Race Three:
1st: #3 CHEAP AND CHEERFUL – was a sharp winner two starts back when dropped down in class then came back against this optional claiming level and led to the deep stretch in fast time. Daughter of Collected gets Mike Allen.
2nd: #4 MOTOWN MISCHIEF – broke her maiden first time out back in May, which meant that she had to face much better company. She came back here as the 7-5 favorite and tired badly, but Tim Hamm wheels her right back against the same level.
3rd: #6 INDIAN SPIDEROO (scratched) – went gate to wire going two turns at 6-5 odds then did nothing in a turf stakes at Saratoga.
Race Four:
1st: #8 CANCAN SAREE – took her 11 tries to break her maiden then raced evenly against modest winners her next four. Bill Martin wins 19% with his claimers but is only 1-for-23 when he uses Huber Villa-Gomez.
2nd: #7 PURCHASE POINT – was soundly beaten on the dirt going a mile at Thistledown then came back here and broke her maiden at 5 1/2 furlongs. She drops down to the right class level for Matt Kintz who wins 25% of first starts after a maiden win.
3rd: #1 BLUE GRASS ANNA – ships in from Belterra Park for her Presque Isle debut. Kevin Fletcher wins 17% with his overall claimers.
Race Five:
1st: #5 WOODCHUCK – beat this optional claiming level going this distance in blazing time then tired when moved up to two turns and couldn’t make the lead. Now, he drops back down to the level he should have been at all along.
2nd: #7 TWIRLING MAMBA – began his Tapeta career here with two wins in three starts. He raced evenly next out then just missed going six furlongs in one of the fastest six-furlong times of the meet. Bill Martin wins 17% with his synthetic-track starters.
3rd: #6 DIAMOND DUST – horse for the course won here two starts back then tired in a stakes race in fast time.
Race Six:
1st: #9 QUARTERFLASH – ran well and eventually broke her maiden on the turf then came here off the Tim Girten claim and rallied for second against this state-bred allowance group. Girten wins 34% of first starts after being beaten as the favorite.
2nd: #1 VACCINA – broke her maiden by over five lengths after opening up a clear lead here then showed good speed to the final yards for Cassandra Judd, who wins 21% with her route starters, and the last 24 show a flat-bet profit.
3rd: #3 ULTIMATE BARONESS – just missed against this state-bred allowance level then ran poorly going six furlongs.
Race Seven:
1st: #3 CHRISTMAS DIAMOND – raced evenly against allowance foes then came back and upset a stakes race in fast time at 20-1. She has prospered since coming here from California so I can’t say it was a fluke. Teresa Connelly wins 25% of first starts after a win.
2nd: #6 MISS MIKAELA – beat cheaper claimers in fast time two starts back when she went gate to wire in her Tapeta debut. She tired a bit last out when moved up in class for John Guciardo, who wins 20% of first starts after being beaten as the favorite.
3rd: #2 GRAYSONSMACHO GAL – very inconsistent dirt horse shows a win by 17 and a win by 11 but lost her last by 34.
Race Eight:
1st: #4 SERENE WARRIOR – was having mixed success against better then dropped down to the bottom last out and won going away at five furlongs. Since she wasn’t claimed that day, Tim Girten runs her back against the same group.
2nd: #6 WILD LOOKER – beat this claiming level two starts back going six furlongs then tired last out when stretched out to two turns. Daughter of Warrior’s Reward turns back to a sprint for Carol Skawinski.
3rd: #7 AMAZON LIZZIE – horse for the course rallied from off the pace to win going away last out here.
