Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Oct. 19
Race One:
1st: #1 PRETTY DEVIL – returns to the races off a 53-day layoff for Scooter Davis. She drops down in class and draws the rail, where she sometimes shows gate speed. Willie Martinez rides — flat-bet profit with his last 130 sprint rides.
2nd: #7 MAPLELINE – winless after 15 tries, but all of them came against better maiden company. Daughter of Shackleford has some Tapeta experience at Turfway Park and shows up here after showing speed going a mile on the turf eight days ago.
3rd: #6 DANCE FOR BOURBON – has been showing good speed going two turns on the dirt at Finger Lakes.
Race Two:
1st: #4 TRACKER JACKER – rallied from just off the pace to pull away by almost five lengths two starts back then did nothing last out against this class level in a very slow-paced race. Daughter of Flintshire could be tough if sent to the lead.
2nd: #3 TALES OF MAKENNA – ran okay on dirt and turf then shipped here and was a good third as the 7-5 favorite against better. She drops in class for Linda Rice, who wins 32% with this move and 26% of first starts after being beaten as the favorite.
3rd: #2 SCOOP THERE IT IS – suddenly woke up at 24-1 two starts back here then ran poorly against winners.
Race Three:
1st: #9 MID ATLANTIC – was a game second against this maiden claiming level in his Presque Isle debut then moved up in class and ran second both times. He drops back down to a more realistic level for John Fennessy, who wins 21% with this move.
2nd: #5 WHONEW’S TREASURE – ran well in his third start here when going a two-turn mile in fast time. He raced wide next time out then came back against this maiden claiming level and rallied from just off the pace to be second at 7-5 odds.
3rd: #6 MAGIC WIZARD – still a maiden after 16 tries but all but two came against better company and most were on turf.
Race Four:
1st: #7 DONALD – added blinkers two starts back and he missed going gate to wire by a head after opening up a big lead. He came back and showed speed to the deep stretch going five furlongs and now goes back to six furlongs.
2nd: #2 BLUE SKY’S ABOVE – horse for the course was an easy winner two starts back in blazing-fast time and if he can run back to that effort, he handles these. Last out, he came back and was a game second at 3-5 for John Bourke.
3rd: #3 SUNSHINE CHARLIE – has yet to win here in five tries but has yet to run a bad race for Maria Bowersock.
Race Five:
1st: #3 CARRONADE – returned off a six-month layoff and was an even fourth in good time when making his Presque Isle debut. He came back and broke his maiden by over eight lengths on a sloppy track at Thistledown and gets Gaddiel Martinez.
2nd: #4 NORTH CAROLINA – was claimed two starts back then broke his maiden by over five lengths in very fast time going a mile at 2-5. Son of Speightstown moves up in class, but he has races in his past that show he can do it.
3rd: #6 YOUMUSTBEA WEASLEY – doesn’t win very much but has five seconds and five thirds and many in fast time.
Race Six:
1st: #4 UMBRAGE – just missed on dirt at Monmouth Park against this claiming level then just missed on the turf. His last start was on a sloppy track and now he tries Tapeta for Jeff Englehart, who wins 18% of second starts off the claim.
2nd: #5 CREATIVE CHOICE – beat this claiming level here two starts back then was outkicked when allowed to set a slow pace. He has decent pace, and Mike Allen rides back for Lisa Allen — 15% together.
3rd: #7 SPEED WAY – won his Presque Isle debut going short then raced evenly the last three going two turns.
Race Seven:
1st: #6 DYNASTY OF HER OWN – prolific winner won 10 times on the Tapeta at Golden Gate. She ran well in a stakes race here two starts back then showed good speed from post one without Lasix in the Masters (G2). Antonio Gallardo rides.
2nd: #2 TACTICAL PAJAMAS – horse for the course won a state-bred stakes race here going gate to wire then tired in a sprint stake. She came back and tired going two turns and now returns in a sprint off two bullet workouts here.
3rd: #5 I RECALL – won two Ohio-bred stakes races on turf and dirt then ran well here in an open stakes race going two turns.
Race Eight:
1st: #6 FEAR THE DEER – held on for third three starts back going two turns then chased the pace and tired. He rallied some to get up for third in a wide trip going 5 1/2 furlongs and stretches back out for Lilli Kurtinecz, who wins 10% going short to long.
2nd: #9 SKYDIVING – dropped down to this conditioned claiming level and rallied from way back to miss by a nose. He was an even fourth last out when moved up to state-bred allowance foes and now drops back down in class.
