Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Sept. 5
Race One:
1st: #1 STAR OF SHANGHAI – was running well in sprint races against cheaper. She moved up to this maiden claiming level and was a good second then was an even fourth going two turns against maiden special weight company.
2nd: #6 SIGN AND SEAL – was claimed for this price going two turns then raced against maiden special weight company the next three starts. Daughter of Broken Vow drops back down in class for Mike Pappada, who wins 38% against maiden claimers.
3rd: #2 TOOSWEETFORME – was badly outrun in her first two tries at two turns but then ran much better with blinkers on.
Race Two:
1st: #2 ON BASE – returned to the races off a seven-month layoff with two average races against open allowance foes. Now, he takes a giant drop in class for Kevin Rice, who wins 24% of third starts off the layoff and 16% with his synthetic track starters.
2nd: #6 MARSAC – speedball breaking from the outside held on for third in his last two starts here. He has yet to win here in six tries but will be tough if Eddie Dominguez can get him to the front — 14% with his route rides.
3rd: #3 EXPLOSIVE HUMOUR – stretches out to two turns off some decent sprints here against slightly better company.
Race Three:
1st: #4 RICHARD HOOTY – broke his maiden two starts back going this distance then moved up to this conditioned claiming level, and his late rally fell a neck short. Matt Kintz wins 22% going long, and the last 116 show a flat-bet profit.
2nd: #5 STUDYLONGSTDYWRONG – beat decent maiden claimers going 5 1/2 furlongs then came back with two even efforts going six furlongs. Now, he stretches out to two turns for Mike Rogers, who wins 21% going short to long.
3rd: #1 CREATIVE CHOICE – tired here two starts back at class and distance then just missed after disputing the pace.
Race Four:
1st: #5 SNOW JOB – went gate to wire against better then came back and romped by six lengths. That was his last conditioned claimers, so he tired in a long sprint. Now, he drops to the bottom for Ed Rojas, who wins 25% of first starts after losing as the favorite.
2nd: #3 STUCK UP – drops to the bottom off a series of solid efforts here going short. He held on for fourth two starts back then just missed last out. Ron Potts wins 21% with his synthetic track starters and 18% with his overall claimers.
3rd: #8 MAKES GOOD SENSE – speedy gelding breaking from the outside was a game second against these last out.
Race Five:
1st: #4 ZIP CODE ENVY – rallied five wide to get up for second in her well-bet career debut here going 5 1/2 furlongs. Daughter of California Chrome tries six furlongs for Tim Hamm, who wins 13% with his second-time starters and 29% with Pablo Morales.
2nd: #1 WARRIOR’S RANSOM – made up a little ground in her well-bet career debut then improved a lot last out. Daughter of Warrior’s Reward draws the rail for Tim Girten, who wins 24% with his maiden special weight starters.
3rd: #3 BE SHARP – first-time starter by Sharp Azteca who is winning 20% with his debut runners.
Race Six:
1st: #1 LOVELY EVER AFTER – broke her maiden by almost five lengths in her second Presque Isle start then came back and missed by a neck. She came back and beat state-bred maidens and now takes on open company allowance foes.
2nd: #6 VILLAGE QUEEN – horse for the course just missed two starts back against this level going this distance. She came back with a similar second but in slower times for Ron Potts, who wins 19% with his route starters.
3rd: #4 STARSHIP MACYS – beat cheaper by six lengths then came back and beat them again. Moves up in class off the claim.
Race Seven:
1st: #5 MUSIC AMORE – moved up off the claim by Gerry Brooks going six furlongs then stretched out to two turns and won easily. Last out, she won a $100K stakes race at Laurel in an off-the-turf event. Scott Spieth picks up the mount.
2nd: #8 ROSES FOR DEBRA – won her career debut but was disqualified. She came back to break her maiden by almost six lengths then won a state-bred stakes race going 6 1/2 furlongs in very fast time. Daughter of Liam’s Map can stalk from here.
3rd: #9 BOO BOO KITTY – broke her maiden then came back to win two of her next three, including a stakes race here last out.
Race Eight:
1st: #2 PEMAQUID PETE – won going two turns three starts back then just missed going a mile in very fast time. He came back to win again last out and the horse for the course has enough speed to take advantage of an inside draw with Mike Allen back aboard.
2nd: #5 A COTSWOLD VILLAGE – was allowed to set a dawdling pace two starts back before getting caught going longer then ran much better last out. Cassondra Weaver wins 24% with her route starters and 25% on synthetic tracks.
3rd: #6 ROUGH NIGHT – speedy gelding has had a great season here so far and drops a bit in class for new trainer Ryan Walsh.
