Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2023

July 31st, 2023

Dick Powell offers his selections for the Tuesday card at Presque Isle Downs.

Race One:

1st(4) RAINAS ROLLIN – looked ready two starts back when she was run down in the deep stretch as the 7-10 favorite. She came back with an even third and now drops down to $25K conditioned claimers for Ron Rogers.

2nd(5) SUPER GREMLIN – broke his maiden two starts back in his Presque Isle debut going six furlongs. He came back against this claiming level with a good second for Kevin Rice, who wins 18% with his overall claiming starters.

3rd(2) OUTHUSTLE – broke his maiden by over five lengths at 15-1 in his career debut against cheap maidens.

Race Two:

1st(2) TUDOX RUE MAJESTIC – she dropped down to this claiming level two starts back and almost went gate to wire at 19-1 behind a next-out winner. She just missed as the 2-1 favorite when moved up a notch in class and drops down again.

2nd(3) BOURBON BLAST – mare has been up and down the class ladder without much recent success so she drops down to bottom claimers. Daughter of Jersey Town has some back class here and gets Erin Walker back aboard.

3rd(1) TWISTED TREASURE – rallied from just off the pace to win going away two starts back then was third against the top choice.

Race Three:

1st: (2) MOLISE – faced this claiming level in her second start of the year and she was a good second, then she just missed when moved up to open allowance foes. Daughter of Ghostzapper drops back down for Bill Martin, who wins 14% short to long.

2nd: (5) STARSHIP BELMONT – went gate to wire to easily win her seasonal debut here then showed good speed the next two when moved up some in class. Daughter of War Dancer drops down in class some and gets Martina Rojas back aboard.

3rd(3) WILD IRISH – began the year with a good fourth at six furlongs here then beat similar claiming company last out.

Race Four:

1st(6) CALVARY KAT – recovered from a poor start to win going away in her well-bet career debut. Considering what she overcame, she should have little trouble stretching out to two turns for Tim Girten, who wins 42% with Pablo Morales.

2nd(2) R GIRL FAITH – was a distant second in her two-turn debut going a mile here in fast time. She was soundly beaten on the dirt at Finger Lakes and comes back for another try on Tapeta for low-percentage connections.

3rd(3) PROTECTTHEWITNESS – went gate to wire against cheaper last out after opening up a huge lead.

Race Five:

1st(5) WARRIOR’S CAUSE – improved when Lasix and blinkers were added on dirt then ran well in his next three starts on turf at Penn National. Son of Warrior’s Reward tries Tapeta with Pablo Morales getting aboard.

2nd(8) IMPOSTER SYNDROME – could not overcome post 10 two starts back at Gulfstream Park on their Tapeta then shipped here and rallied wide going six furlongs. Matt Kintz wins 22% against this maiden level and goes with Martina Rojas.

3rd(1) SMOKE WAGON – speedy colt by Gun Runner gets some class relief against these.

Race Six:

1st(5) RUNAWAY STAR – finished up last year with a gate-to-wire victory against this level. She could have had the claim waived so they must be pretty confident to risk losing her off a win. Cassondra Weaver is 10-for-20 first start after a win.

2nd(3) GOLDEN SODA – was a good third against better after a rough start two starts back. He gunned from the gate last out and was right there in the final 100 yards, so Keith Dickey drops him down in class.

3rd(6) HAMMER LANE – has plenty of back class but looks for relief in here after being outrun in his last three starts.

Race Seven:

1st(7) RUSTY MY BROTHER – made her Tapeta debut a winning one here in her second career start. She came back and beat state-bred allowance foes rather easily then weakened against stakes foes after challenging a fast pace.

2nd(3) HOT BODE – moved up in class but she is in strong form and won her Presque Isle debut by over five lengths here off the long layoff. Scooter Davis wins 11% first start after a win and 23% with Willie Martinez.

3rd(4) STARSHIP MACYS – horse for the course has shown high speed in all three Presque Isle starts this year.

Race Eight:

1st(4) LORD OF LEGENDS – just missed going gate to wire in his Presque Isle debut two starts back then held well for third last out. Claimed that day by Gerry Brooks — 19% with this move — he goes back to Angel Stanley.

2nd(2) EXPLOSIVE HUMOUR – began the season off the long layoff with a sharp win then tired next out. He raced evenly at long odds last out for Mike Pappada, who wins 19% with his sprinters and 17% with his claimers.

3rd(1) CHARLIE CHARLIE – horse for the course should improve second start off the layoff.
