Dick Powell gives his selections and analysis for Presque Isle Downs for Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023.
Race One:
1st: (6) MONGOLIAN MISSION – just missed in her first two starts here then was an even third last out. Daughter of Noble Mission can stalk while clear on the outside. Shana Lucarelli wins 14% with her sprinters and overall claimers.
2nd: (2) WINDY CITY GIRL – ran well last year here going two turns but has yet to run back to them. She drops down to a sprint and removes blinkers. Martina Rojas picks up the mount — 19% with her sprint rides this year.
3rd: (4) PEEP’S DAY – showed good speed going two turns then rallied in sprints the last two starts here.
Race Two:
1st: (4) TIDAL WATERS – horse for the course won three times here last year and returns off the long layoff for Tim Girten, who wins 20% in this spot and with his synthetic-track starters. Pablo Morales rides — 40% with Girten.
2nd: (5) PLATINUM SKY – missed by two lengths in her first start off a long layoff then raced evenly as the 7-5 favorite. Matt Kintz wins 26% third start off the layoff and 22% first start after being beaten as the favorite.
3rd: (1) LADY MARVEL – is winless in 19 tries here, but she was a game second in her last two starts when she opened up big leads.
Race Three:
1st: (5) CLOSE KNIT – rallied from off the pace to break his maiden by over five lengths in his Presque Isle debut two starts back. He opened up a big lead before tiring, but Pablo Morales rides back so it’s unlikely that it will happen again.
2nd: (1) LUCKY SMILE – rushed up from post one after a tardy start then ran erratically in the stretch. He came back to go gate to wire last out here and now takes on winners with Gaddiel Martinez.
3rd: (6) GOVERNOR ATWOOD – broke his maiden in his 13th career start then was an even fourth against this class level.
Race Four:
1st: (5) ANIPPE – just missed when blinkers were added for the first time then she went gate to wire next time out. She won in very fast time last out going a two-turn mile for Ed Rojas, who wins 34% first start after a win and 43% with Martina Rojas.
2nd: (1) SAILOR’S SALUTE – did nothing in four starts against state-bred allowance foes but woke up last out when she was a good second against this claiming level. Cathy Rozantz wins 18% with her route starters, and the last 79 of them show a flat-bet profit.
3rd: (2) JEFF’S ANGEL – was a decent third last out against this class level and draws well here.
Race Five:
1st: (4) CERTAIN – drops down to bottom maiden claimers and makes his Tapeta debut here. His last four turf sprint starts were not bad. Ricky Hendriks wins 18% first start after being beaten as the favorite and gets Antonio Gallardo.
2nd: (1) GURT’S WARRIOR – showed some speed in his Tapeta debut going two turns against better company. Son of Warrior’s Reward draws the rail and gets Martina Rojas — 19% with her sprint rides.
3rd: (6) DOUBLE WARRIOR – showed good speed in his first start against this maiden level then ran about the same race.
Race Six:
1st: (4) FREDDY’S MUSIC – still winless after 14 tries but most of them were against similar company. He missed by a nose two starts back then weakened late when dropped down in class at 7-5.
2nd: (7) GEMINI MOON – was a good third behind the top choice then tried blinkers to no avail. He finished poorly last out but gets Erin Walker back aboard. Son of Gormley does his best when put in the race early.
3rd: (1) EAST BY WEST – ships into Presque Isle off a decent third on the dirt at Thistledown going this distance in the slop.
Race Seven:
1st: (4) EXTRASEXYBIGDADDEE – horse for the course romped two starts back against first-level allowance foes then raced evenly in a stakes race. He turns back to allowance foes for Mike Trombetta, who wins 21% on synthetic tracks.
2nd: (3) GROUNDED – horse for the course won two mid-level claimers in a row here then came back against this level and battled to the final furlong. Tim Hamm wins 20% with his synthetic-track starters and gets Morales.
3rd: (2) PAYNTED WARRIOR – speedball went gate to wire in a long sprint then tired last out.
Race Eight:
1st: (5) LORD OF LEGENDS – was claimed for this price by Gerry Brooks, who won easily in fast time. Jamie Buhrow went back to re-claim him and runs back against the same group. Angel Stanley rides back.
2nd: (3) WORBOTHOR – horse for the course has won 16 times here. The 11-year-old might be slowing down, but he’s been rested for four weeks by new trainer Mal Roman. Addiel Ayala rides back — 13% with his sprint mounts.
3rd: (8) SOUTH SEA – flashed brief speed in his Tapeta debut here two starts back but held better last out against better company.
