May 22nd, 2023

Dick Powell offers his picks and analysis for the Tuesday racing card at Presque Isle Downs.

Race One:

1st(1) ALEXANDRA’S SONG – showed high speed from post 10 on the dirt at Keeneland for Wesley Ward, who wins 27% off medium rest. Daughter of City of Light is out of a stakes-placed dam by No Nay Never.

2nd(6) SPENDING CUTS – first-time starter from Ron Potts, who wins 12% with his debut runners and 16% against this maiden level. Daughter of Frosted (12% debut winners) is out of a stakes-winning dam by Whywhywhy that has produced seven winners.

3rd(7) BERYL RACER – daughter of West Coast is a half-sister to three winners, including a stakes winner.

Race Two:

1st(2) DEISE DELIGHT – went gate to wire two starts back on the Tapeta at Turfway Park to win by seven lengths, then did little when moved up in class at Gulfstream Park. Steve Lyster wins 28% second start off the layoff and picks up Pablo Morales.

2nd(4) TUDOX ROADSTER – was a game second here in fast time last September then tired in her final start of the year. She returns off a 217-day layoff for Ron Potts, who wins 21% with his overall synthetic-track starters.

3rd(1) PEEP’S DAY – looks like she has enough gate speed to keep from being shuffled back from post one.

Race Three:

1st: (1) ANTIGONE – beat open allowance foes last September here in her Tapeta debut then was an even third in good time. She makes her first start of 2023 for Scooter Davis, who wins 29% with his overall claimers.

2nd: (3) FOLK HERO – missed by a neck the last time she faced this claiming level then won by seven lengths on the dirt at Penn National. She showed high speed before weakening here six days ago and adds blinkers while taking off 10 pounds.

3rd(5) MAKE NO MISTAKE – beat much better here last year going this distance in very fast time.

Race Four:

1st(2) SAVVY ON BLANC – did little in his first two career starts at Turfway Park then woke up when dropped down in class and missed breaking his maiden by a neck. Son of Kitten’s Joy was claimed out of his last start and draws well with Willie Martinez.

2nd(1) JUSTICEOFTHEPEACE – showed good speed two races in a row when stretched out to two turns then tired last out in his turf debut. He draws the rail, drops in class and makes his Tapeta debut.

3rd(7) BIALYSTOCK – was beaten by a combined 62 lengths in his first three career starts then woke up two starts back when Lasix was added.

Race Five:

1st(4) LORD REVELSTOKE – hasn’t seen the winner’s circle in quite a while, but he has the advantage of a recent trip on the turf at Indiana against better company. First Samurai offspring have an affinity for the Tapeta here, and he gets Pablo Morales.

2nd(6) ORAZIO – horse for the course spent the winter at Turfway Park and won his last start there when dropped down to this claiming level. Six-year-old son of Animal Kingdom has little early speed but will be coming late.

3rd(1) UNCLE ANDREW – makes his first start of the year off a good effort going seven furlongs on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs.

Race Six:

1st(4) TEMPLET – returned to the races off the long layoff with a gate-to-wire win here last week against similar company. Teresa Connelly wins 13% first start after a win and gets Antonio Gallardo back aboard.

2nd(3) PIKE PLACE – woke up when trying turf at Tampa Bay Downs when he showed high speed in two starts in a row. He tired in his next two against this allowance level for Eoin Harty, who wins 22% first start after being beaten as the favorite.

3rd(8) ALL OUR MUNNY – improved a lot last out in an off-the-turf event when blinkers were added.

Race Seven:

1st(1) KEYSTONE HANK – had a good year here when making his first 11 career starts and winning $66K. He prospered when Lasix was added, and throw out his two-turn starts and he did really well. Scott Spieth returns in the irons.

2nd(4) WHERE YOU WAS – horse for the course beat similar state-bred company two starts back in October then was an even fourth in very fast time against open company. Ron Rogers wins 16% with his overall allowance foes.

3rd(5) RIO ABAJO – has won five times here with five other placings, and he won off the layoff last year.

Race Eight:

1st(4) LIBERTALIA – still winless after 19 tries, but she has four seconds from eight tries on the Tapeta here, and all came against better company. Ron Allen Jr. rides back for Maria Bowersock — 17% together.

2nd(3) BROKEN LOVE – winless in 18 career starts, and 16 of them came here. She has been up and down the maiden class ladder and has some decent efforts against this level. Kris Fox rides her after just missing aboard her last season.

3rd(6) GLO GIRL GLO – speedball could be tough if she can break running from here.
