Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023
Dick Powell offers his selections and analysis for Tuesday's card at Presque Isle Downs.
Race One:
1st: (6) LOVE IS FOREVER – first-time starter from Tim Girten, who wins 19% with his debut runners and 22% with his maiden claimers. Son of Uptowncharlybrown (12% debut winners) is out of a Ghostzapper mare whose only two foals to race have won.
2nd: (8) DOUBLE DRIBBLE – raced evenly going two turns on the turf going a mile at Hawthorne then came here and was an even fourth as the odds-on favorite against this maiden claiming level. Larry Rivelli wins 35% on synthetic tracks.
3rd: (1) EMPTY MY POUCH – still winless after six tries but his last three against this level have been okay.
Race Two:
1st: (4) SHEER ALICE – winless after 16 tries but has four seconds and two thirds in 10 starts here. Daughter of top British turf sprint sire Kodiac showed high speed in most of her starts here and gets Erin Walker.
2nd: (3) JAZZ TIME GIRL – keeps dropping in class looking for the right spot. She made a strong middle move to take the lead in the deep stretch before tiring last out. In a fast race. Scott Spieth rides back.
3rd: (1) AFTER NOON KISSES – not only is she winless in 13 tries but has yet to finish in the money. Still, she has speed and the rail.
Race Three:
1st: (5) DREAM WARRIOR – broke her maiden here going six furlongs when Lasix was added for the first time. She weakened late in her two-turn debut then came back and went gate to wire as the 6-5 favorite.
2nd: (4) ANA L – has been knocking around against lower-level claimers going short in her last nine starts here. She moves up in class second start off the claim and adds Lasix.
3rd: (2) LA PANDA – was a good second two starts back against open allowance foes then won when dropped way down in class.
Race Four:
1st: (1) DANEFIELD – just missed going two turns against better company then held for third in a long sprint as the odds-on favorite. He was a sound winner in fast time last out and meets about the same group from post one.
2nd: (2) WROTE IN STONE – horse-for-the-course speedball went gate to wire three starts back. He tired last out then moved up to open allowance foes and won in blazing time. John Fennessy wins 18% first start after a win.
3rd: (8) ENJOY THE MUSIC – has won 11 times here over the years as Larry Rivelli finds races without being exposed to the claim.
Race Five:
1st: (2) DORTH’S SOL DANCER – improved in her Tapeta debut here with a good second going six furlongs. Anthony Ferraro wins 13% with his synthetic-track starters, and the son of good, young sire Solomini gets Addiel Ayala.
2nd: (5) MEL’S ANGEL – didn’t do much in her career debut at long odds in a turf sprint at Saratoga. Daughter of Leofric draws well and gets Gaddiel Martinez — 18% with his sprint rides.
3rd: (8) VICOUNTESS – first-time starter by the speedy Lord Nelson. Todd Beattie wins 26% against this maiden level.
Race Six:
1st: (7) DAWGMENTALITY – went gate to wire two starts back against state-bred allowance foes. Gelded son of Smarty Jones just missed last out when facing this group, and now Scooter Davis removes blinkers.
2nd: (6) SHY DA RUNNER – has found a home at Presque Isle. His first two starts here were not much, but he beat similar claimers going 5 1/2 furlongs two starts back then beat them again going a two-turn mile in fast time.
3rd: (8) HONOR LEO JEAN – won his Tapeta debut here going a two-turn mile then was outrun at Saratoga.
Race Seven:
1st: (5) GET EVEN – was stuck at the open, first-level allowance level all year before finally bursting through last out going this distance. Speed from the outside in long sprints seems the way to go, and he fits the profile.
2nd: (2) WARRIOR’S PAYOFF – broke his maiden in his Tapeta debut here, then he came back and went gate to wire against allowance foes. He grabbed an easy state-bred allowance purse last out and now moves up for Brandon Kulp.
3rd: (1) DREAMING OF KONA – broke his maiden here last year and a stake race back in June for the Spieths.
Race Eight:
1st: (5) CEDUNA – horse for the course beat similar three starts back then raced wide from post eight. He chased a mild pace last out and now meets the same group under the same circumstances in only his fifth start of the year.
2nd: (9) JEN’S SONG – horse for the course has gone off form and drops down to bottom claimers for Kim DePasquale. When he’s right, he can sit off the pace and finish strongly, so Willie Martinez fits him well.
3rd: (1) ORAZIO – almost overcame post 10 at long odds last out and now draws the rail with Angel Stanley back.
