Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024
Dick Powell handicaps Tuesday's card at Presque Isle Downs.
Race 1
1st: (2) WILD LOOKER – ran poorly when stretched out to two turns, then was a good second in fast time going this distance against this class level. He’s been stuck at this level all year but faces a really weak group.
2nd: (3) WATERLOO SUNSET – has some decent efforts in the past and at least she showed good speed before weakening last out behind the top choice. Victor Severino shows a flat-bet profit with his 85 sprint rides this year.
3rd: (1) LIGHTNING ROUND – turns back to a sprint for Moses Valdez, who does well with his claimers.
Race 2
1st: (7) UNCLE ARLYS – first-time starter from Todd Beattie, who wins 16% with his debut runners and 18% against maiden claimers. Son of Malibu Moon (12% debut winners) has been training well on the dirt at Penn National.
2nd: (1) EMMA AT THE GATE – drops down to maiden claimers for the first time. He showed high speed going two turns last out here and turns back to a sprint while removing blinkers. Antonio Gallardo rides back and wins 31% with Tim Girten over the last 60 days.
3rd: (3) JAKE’S AFFECTION – still a maiden after 15 tries, but his last could get him in the mix.
Race 3
1st: (4) WARRIOR’S COBBLER – first-time starter from Tim Girten, who wins 17% with his debut runners and 21% against this maiden level. Son of Warrior’s Reward (11% debut winners) is the first foal to race out of a stakes-placed dam.
2nd: (2) PALACE REVOLT – first-time starter from Tim Hamm, who wins 13% with his debut runners and 21% against this maiden level. Son of Palace Malice (10% debut winners) is a half-brother to a two-year-old stakes winner.
3rd: (1) RIDGE WARRIOR – first-time starter from Girten gets Pablo Morales, who wins 31% with Girten over the last 60 days.
Race 4
1st: (4) RAISE YOUR GAME – daughter of Violence found a home here last out when she won going away after being shuffled back from post 1 in her Tapeta debut. She draws better today and can win this convincingly.
2nd: (5) MISS GETTY UP – returned to the races off an even effort and should improve here. She has plenty of form elsewhere on Tapeta for Tim Girten, who wins 21% with his synthetic-track starters.
3rd: (7) NEW WAYS TO DREAM – won two in a row here before being a good second as the 11-10 favorite.
Race 5
1st: (3) HAIG POINT – rallied from way back to get up in time two starts back, then was a good second in faster time last out. He tends to get overbet, but Girten wins 41% first start after being beaten as the favorite.
2nd: (4) CATATUMBO – raced evenly two straight starts against better company, then dropped down to this level and rallied wide for third behind the top choice. Gallardo rides back and wins 32% with his route rides this year.
3rd: (2) HEY PADRE – raced evenly sprinting against better, then beat this class and distance last out.
Race 6
1st: (9) TRAVELLER – showed good speed going two turns against better, then was an even third in a long sprint against this class level. He raced evenly last out back at two turns but has to break well from a wide draw with Erin Walker.
2nd: (1) SON OF LIBERTY – just missed going gate to wire in his PID debut two starts back against these, then was an even fourth on the turf when moved up in class. If he breaks running from the rail, he might not stop.
3rd: (4) DANCING MISCHIEF – raced against better on the turf but then lost all chance here in a sprint when he broke poorly.
Race 7
1st: (5) STACY ATTACK – won on the turf at Mountaineer Park, then ran well in her next two starts. She made her PID debut last out and missed by a length against this optional claiming level. Gallardo rides back.
2nd: (6) A KISS FOR KHOZAN – tired two starts back as the 2-1 favorite, then moved up a notch in class off the claim by Krista Hetrick, who wins 28% with her sprint starters and 18% first start after a win.
3rd: (7) IRISH VICTORY – moves up in class off two gate-to-wire wins against cheaper for the Spieths.
Race 8
1st: (3) CRAZY KATER – just missed two starts back in fast time, then weakened late when dropped down in class. He takes another drop for Mike Salvaggio, who wins 24% first start after being beaten as the favorite and 16% with his claimers.
2nd: (1) ET’S MAGIC MAN – raced evenly on the turf two starts back against better, then rallied for second last out. He drops down to bottom claimers for his PID debut for Naoise Agnew, who wins 13% with her claimers.
3rd: (2) COMEDIC TIMING – gelded son of Into Mischief drops down to the bottom for Ed Rojas, who is 40% with this move.
