Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Wednesday, July 19, 2023
Dick Powell offers his selections for the Wednesday card at Presque Isle Downs.
Race One:
1st: (2) YEAH TAKE THAT – has the advantage of a race over the track which came 16 days ago going this distance. He adds blinkers and gets a rider switch to Antonio Gallardo – 2 for 5 riding for Gerry Brooks.
2nd: (1) FRIZZANTE – first-time starter from Tim Hamm, who wins 15% with his debut runners and 20% against this maiden level. This son of Vino Rosso, who is off to a good start with his first crop to race, has been training well here.
3rd: (4) A BIT OF CAPTAIN – ran well in his career debut but then went backward last out.
Race Two:
1st: (3) SCOOP THERE IT IS – still hasn’t won here in nine tries but ran well last year against this level. Her two starts were against much better and now drops in class for Mike Pappada, who wins 21% with this move and 18% third start off the layoff.
2nd: (1) REDHOT KATIE – was an even fourth in her first start off the claim by Ed Rojas. She came back and missed by a nose as the odds-on favorite and then missed by a length last out. Pablo Morales rides back.
3rd: (2) TUDOX RUE MAJESTIC – horse for the course tired two starts back here, but held on for second at 19-1 last out.
Race Three:
1st: (6) SOGNO DI CAMPIONE – speedball went gate to wire to win in fast time going seven furlongs on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs. The son of Into Mischief came back at Mountaineer Park to win easily and now tries Tapeta for the first time.
2nd: (1) CATCH ON EMOTIONAL – went gate to wire to win by over six lengths in his Tapeta debut going five furlongs. He was run down last out going six furlongs but then came right back to win gate to wire in very fast time as the 1-2 favorite.
3rd: (2) DIAMOND DUST – horse for the course went gate to wire two starts back and then was run down late.
Race Four:
1st: (4) CHARLIE CHARLIE – horse for the course won here last year in his first start off a similar layoff. He finished up last year in poor shape but has been freshened up at the age of 11 by Larry Hayes, who wins 24% with his overall claimers.
2nd: (6) CAPTAIN MAD JACK – horse for the course has started out this season with two dull efforts but he ran well last year. Shelly Radosevich wins 16% with her overall claimers and 15% with her synthetic-track starters.
3rd: (5) ANOTHER BREEZE – returned off the long layoff with two even efforts so maybe he’s ready to improve here.
Race Five:
1st: (6) PLATINUM SKY – rallied for third in her Tapeta debut after getting shuffled back from an inside post. She raced wide last out off the long layoff and should be ready second time for Matt Kintz, who wins 20% in this spot.
2nd: (3) ABBEY’S SNOW WHITE – was only beaten a length here two starts back and then missed by a neck last out at long odds. This horse for the course draws well for an inside stalking trip with Angel Stanley.
3rd: (10) TIZ PROMISING RVF – beat one level better two starts back going two turns at 66-1.
Race Six:
1st: (5) BARNEGAT LIGHT – ran well in two starts on the turf this winter at Tampa Bay Downs and then shipped back here and chased the field. He drops down in class for Tim Hamm, who wins 21% with his overall claimers.
2nd: (3) WHISKEYMAC – broke his maiden here by three lengths going a two-turn mile in fast time and then came right back and beat state-bred allowance foes. He was a good third as the odds-on favorite last out and gets in light with Martina Rojas.
3rd: (6) LITTLE BIG – moves way up in class off two straight wins going six furlongs, but at least he’s in shape.
Race Seven:
1st: (10) NIGHT RIDE – broke his maiden at 7-5 odds two starts back here going five furlongs and then stretched out to two turns and got up to win by a neck. He takes another move up for Lance Stokes, who wins 36% first start after a win.
2nd: (2) SAKETUMI – won his lone start on Tapeta last October when he beat state-bred allowance foes. After two turf preps for this, he takes on open allowance foes and draws well with Scott Spieth, who rode him to victory last year.
3rd: (7) DECEITFUL – ran well here last year and showed some ability last out on the dirt at Tampa Bay Downs.
Race Eight:
1st: (5) SIDE TRACKED – just missed two starts back off the long layoff but he moved up in class and lost all chance in a rough trip. He drops back down to bottom claimers for Ron Potts, who wins 16% with this move and 18% with his overall claimers.
2nd: (3) FUEL THE BERN – Nine-year-old has been searching for the right spot and has had to drop down to the bottom for Mike Rogers, who wins 16% going short to long, and gets in light with the switch to Martina Rojas.
3rd: (1) TEXAS GANO – inconsistent five-year-old makes his first start off the claim by Kevin Rice – 3 for 10 with this move.
