Presque Isle Downs Selections and Analysis for Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024
Dick Powell handicaps the Wednesday card at Presque Isle Downs.
Race 1
1st: (7) VACCINA – she finished up last season in good form, but that meant she raced above her ability this season. Off the board in her last five starts, she drops all the way to the bottom for Cassandra Judd.
2nd: (1) NEXT DOT – speedball breaking from the inside took 14 tries to break her maiden, but then came back two starts later with a close second against similar company. Daughter of Cairo Prince gets in light with Brooke Bays.
3rd: (4) TUDOR PEAK – has yet to win here, but she has three second in six tries against similar company.
Race 2
1st: (9) SPOKEN VOW – did nothing in her first two career starts but then improved when dropped down in class. She showed high speed in her last two starts for Randy Russell, who is 3-for-10 with this maiden dropdown.
2nd: (5) LITTLE MISS MUNNY – still a maiden after 15 starts, but her last two were not bad against top maiden company. She drops down to maiden claimers and turns back in distance with Israel Rodriguez – 17% with his sprint rides.
3rd: (3) HIGH TRACK – was beaten a combined 30 lengths in her first two career starts, then missed by a length last out.
Race 3
1st: (6) SPEIGHT THE SNOW – broke his maiden second time out, then was a good second in a stakes race at 25-1. He came back against this class level with a good second for Ron Potts, who wins 22% with his synthetic-track starters.
2nd: (8) GOODMENARESCARCE – woke up to break his maiden third time out in his turf debut and should handle Tapeta. He drops back to a sprint for his PID debut for Jimmy Corrigan, who wins 19% with this turnback.
3rd: (3) RANSOM MONEY – took him four starts to break his maiden, then raced evenly against this level.
Race 4
1st: (6) MEROKEE – was a good third in his Tapeta debut here, then won two in a row against this claiming price. He made a strong middle move before weakening last out and tries this class again for Maria Bowersock, who wins 16% with her sprinters.
2nd: (1) CARLOTUK – was an even second against better company in a long sprint, then dropped down to this claiming price and won as the 4-5 favorite. Tim Girten wins 23% first start after a win and gets Antonio Gallardo.
3rd: (4) CALL THE BALL – dropped down to this level and missed by a head, then won from far back last out.
Race 5
1st: (7) CERTAIN – horse for the course romped three starts back in fast time, then missed by a head. He came back and beat better company in 1:08.64 for Teresa Connelly, who wins 19% first start after a win.
2nd: (6) AQUITANIA ARRIVAL – moves up in class off two terrific wins against cheaper. Giant’s Causeway sire line does well here, and this son of Carpe Diem can stalk the pace with Angel Diaz.
3rd: (1) CALL ME LATER – speedball breaking from the inside romped against similar company last out.
Race 6
1st: (8) CHRIS’S KITTY – first-time starter from Matt Kintz, who wins 12% with his debut runners. Daughter of Dialed In (14% debut winners) is out of a stakes-placed dam by Tribal Rule who has produced two winners from two foals to race.
2nd: (4) BEEHAVIN – first-time starter from Eoin Harty, who wins 12% with his debut runners. Daughter of Hightail (12% debut winners) is out of a dam by Tiznow (8% debut winners) whose lone foal to race is a winner.
3rd: (2) CARROLL’S HONOR – first-time starter from Kevin Rice, who wins 16% against this maiden level.
Race 7
1st: (5) ALL THE RAGE – rallied from far back to get third in his Tapeta debut here two starts back, then beat similar company with blinkers put back on. Linda Rice wins 23% against claimers and is 3-for-4 when Walber Alencar rides for her.
2nd: (3) AKAMAI – ran well against better on the Tapeta at Turfway Park, then was second in two of his last three starts on the turf in Indiana. He has decent early speed and drops down in class for Ethan West.
3rd: (9) MISCHIEF WARRIOR – speedball ran well two starts in a row, then could not overcome post 10 last out.
Race 8
1st: (8) RED PIXIE – horse for the course won by four lengths two starts back in good time, then she moved up in class last out and won again. Scooter Davis wins 25% with his synthetic-track starters and 23% first start after a win.
2nd: (7) KISS BLUE – was out of the money in her first three career starts, then shipped here and romped by almost four lengths in very fast time. Riley Mott wins 30% first start after a maiden win and 35% with his synthetic-track starters.
3rd: (2) MILA JUNES – ran well on the dirt in Kentucky against good company for Tom Van Berg.
Race 9
1st: (4) MY SANCTUARY – took her 13 tries to break his maiden, then improved last out in his PID debut with a good second from post 8 going two turns. Mike Stidham wins 17% with his route starters and gets Gallardo.
2nd: (7) SIGMUND – dropped down to this class level for his Tapeta debut here and was a good second. He just missed next out but then tired badly after setting a demanding pace. Tim Girten wins 20% with his route mounts.
3rd: (1) DIABLO DADDY – had a rough trip two starts back, then came back two months later with a close second.
