Presque Isle Downs track update for Sept. 8
We are about halfway through the meet at Presque Isle Downs, which is a great time to check in on the meet!
Most of the meet's stakes are still ahead, including a pair of Pennsylvania-bred events Sept. 13.
Let's dive in!
Jockeys
Halfway through the meet, Pablo Morales leads the jockey standings a romp. He has 72 wins (209 starts, 34%), which is 29 victories clear of Antonio Gallardo (33 wins, 154 starts, 21%).
Surprisingly, for a jockey who has such a gaping lead in the standings, Morales also shows a flat-bet profit for the meet, +17% ROI. That is the best flat-bet ROI among the regular riders this meet, from anyone with more than 35 mounts. And it holds relatively flat, no matter the distance of the race. Morales has a +18% ROI in sprints and +16% in routes.
Life Mission won Monday's $75,000 Karl Boyes Stakes at @PID_Casino for owner/trainer Leland Hayes and jockey @Pablojockey88. The 5-year-old Noble Mission gelding has now won 4 of his 6 starts at Presque Isle!

For other jockey angles at prices, focus on the two-turn races. Among higher-percentage riders, Ronald Allen, Jr. is has nine wins from 38 starts (24%), with a +13% ROI in routes. Other riders worth watching on longshots in routes include Mario Pino (five wins, 25 starts, 11%, +47% ROI) and Walber Alencar (four wins, 34 starts, 12%, +36% ROI).
Trainers
The trainer standings are tight, with a battle between Timothy Hamm (24 wins, 57 starts, 42%, +15% ROI) and Gerald Brooks (22 wins, 72 starts, 31%, +18% ROI) for the lead.
Betting leading trainers has been a surprisingly smart strategy so far. The rest of the top five winning trainer also have positive ROIs — Michael Pappada (16 wins, 50 starts, 32%, +92% ROI), Tim Girten (13 wins, 60 starts, 22%, +10% ROI), and Kevin Rice (12 wins, 63 starts, 19%, +87% ROI).
For other trainers who run fewer horses but find their way into the picture in particular situations?
Maria Bowersock tends to come strong in two-turn races. She has five wins from 12 starts (42%), with a +42% ROI. At one turn, Leland Hayes is similarly hot (five wins from 12 starts), with a dazzling 225% ROI.
