Prize Exhibit sails past Sunset Glow in San Clemente

Jockey Santiago Gonzalez took a firm hold on Prize Exhibit and settled her in the back of the six-filly field. Spirit of Xian had gunned to the front after the gates opened and found company rounding the turn in the form of Paulina’s Love.
Sunset Glow took up a tracking spot on the outside of Paulina’s Love as Spirit of Xian posted splits of :23.27, :47.25 and 1:11.76 over the good turf. Prize Exhibit loped along well off the rail and began picking off rivals rounding the turn.
Sunset Glow had taken over upon hitting the stretch but Prize Exhibit was just kicking into high gear. The dark bay miss glided on past Sunset Glow to finish a mile on the giving green in 1:36.05.
Prize Exhibit took just a tap from the whip to surge clear and hand Gonzalez his third win on the day. Trained by James Cassidy, the sophomore filly was exiting another easy win, this time in the Senorita S. (G3) on June 27.
That was the British-bred lass’ first score since kicking off her 2015 campaign with a January 25 win over allowance/optional claiming rivals in just her second start stateside.
Prize Exhibit actually shipped over for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) last fall and came with a furious rally from well back to be fourth on the wire that day.
Sunset Glow was second in that Breeders’ Cup contest and making her return from a two-month layoff in this spot. The Wesley Ward pupil is no stranger to Del Mar, taking the track’s namesake Debutante S. (G1) last year over the now defunct Polytrack, and continued her streak of placings since that August 30 affair here.
Paulina’s Love reputed herself well while suffering a first loss since switching to Richard Baltas, for whom she broke her maiden and took an allowance/optional claimer in her past two.
