Lovely Maria, a daughter of Majesticperfection out of the Thunder Gulch mare Thundercup, captured the 141st running of the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on Friday at Churchill Downs.
A record Oaks Day crowd of 123,736 was in attendance as the bay filly posted a 2 3/4-length victory under jockey Kerwin Clark, who earned just his second Grade 1 score after guiding Lovely Maria to win the Ashland S. (G1) at Keeneland on April 4.
The filly is trained by Larry Jones and owned by former Kentucky Governor Brereton C. Jones, who each earned a third win in the Run for the Lilies. The pair teamed up in 2012 to score with Believe You Can and in 2008 to triumph with Proud Spell.
Lovely Maria improved her career record to 4-3-0 from eight starts and has now earned $973,000 from two seasons of racing.
In addition to the Ashland, she also ran second in the Rachel Alexandra S. (G3) on February 21 at Fair Grounds in New Orleans and finished fourth in her only other stakes try in the Trapeze S. at Remington Park in Oklahoma City on December 14 as a two-year-old.
The now three-year-old filly was sent off the 6-1 fifth choice against 13 rivals in the Kentucky Oaks and paid $14.60 for the win. She closed at 39-1 on the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (KOFW) and paid $81.60 for those who bet her there.
With Shook Up finishing second in the Kentucky Oaks, those who held a KOFW bet on those two running first and second was rewarded with $8,060.60.
Lovely Maria was bred in Kentucky by Olin B. Gentry and Thomas B. Gaines.
