QH Season Starts at Lone Star Park

September 17th, 2015

Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, will kick off its 2015 live Quarter Horse season on Friday, September 18. The 26-day meet will continue through Saturday, November 14 with many notable special events and graded stakes.

Major stakes include the Refrigerator Handicap on October 3; the Dash for Cash Futurity and Derby on October 10 and the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity and $400,000 Texas Classic Derby on November 14.

Trainers to watch for the upcoming meet include Judd Kearl, Toby Keeton, Trey Wood and Brian Stroud. Jockey Luis Vivanco was the leading rider in 2014, and will return along with Damian Martinez, who won the title at Sam Houston Race Park earlier in the year, Santos Carrizzales, Rodrigo Vallejo and Francisco Calderon.

Additionally, Lone Star Park will also host a national championship, the 2015 Bank of America Challenge Championships on November 6 and 7.

The annual event for Quarter Horse racing, organized by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) is similar to the Breeders' Cup as regional qualifiers from racetracks across the United States, Canada and Mexico compete in six major championships. Lone Star Park has hosted the event four times; last year's host track was Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa. Los Alamitos, Evangeline Downs, Sam Houston Race Park and Fair Grounds have also held the Bank of America Challenge Championships.
