Queen Looking for Another Crown
Boc’s Queen Lady is the only greyhound left undefeated in the 2017th running of the Orange Park Derby. Breaking close in the 15th race, she chased the leader to the far turn and then turned on the juice. Bolting by and taking command, she drove home with a furious rush and left the field in her wake. Crossing 5.5 lengths better than the rest in 37.80 seconds, Boc’s Queen Lady has put herself in the driver’s seat once again for a stakes title in 2017. (In case you forgot, she won the Ironhound Stakes earlier this year.) Early leader Gs Humongous had enough late to survive the late charge of Nizy and win the photo for place. Completing the superfecta was the always gaining Herstal.
The rest of the fields were not as lucky as the bombs went off and the longshots came a running. Spreading out the rest of the points behind her, they are going to be hard pressed to get Queeny out of the finals, if she continues her red-hot efforts.
The other big winner on the card was the Clear Lake Racing kennel. Posting up a pair of wins in the 6 efforts on the card, they were the kennel KING in round number 2. The first win came in the 9th race as Rt Banana Foster came out running. From the start of this one, Gs Ellice and Banana were in an all-out battle for early command of this effort. Ellice got the nod early, but couldn’t hang on to it by the far turn. Neither greyhound gave up, and even though Ellice was passed and Banana took over in the far turn, she was a threat all the way to the finish line. Crossing with just a length between then at the wire, Banana came out on top and Ellice had to settle for place. Jack’s Jet Speed closed hard throughout and overtook the chasing Nb’s Parishilton in the deep stretch to steal away the show position at the finish line.
Clear Lake also took home the top spot in the 11th race on the card. Cbj Thunderbolt left no doubt who was the best greyhound on this occasion. Popping the box, Thunderbolt struck to the lead and never looked back. Catching the breeze in the open air, he dominated from the get go and was never challenged in this effort. Coasting all the way around the racetrack, he was almost 6 lengths clear of the rest at the finish line, in a box to wire effort in 37.73 seconds. Taking next best was the always gaining Super C Amy, followed by the steady chasing Boc’s All I Got, and the even running in the money factor Dutch Casey.
The quickest effort of the night belonged to Dutch Aces Wild in the 13th race. Breaking behind the big-time speeder, Ww’s Jax Straw, and the converted sprinter Bgr Benny Da Jet, Aces Wild has his work cut out for him in this effort. Ww’s Jax Straw drew off on the rest early on and stole 4 lengths before everyone else knew what was going on. But that was short lived as the chasers came a running, and by far turn those lengths had dwindled down to just one as they turned for home. Shifting gears in the stretch Aces Wild would not be denied in this effort. Driving by the leaders late, he cleared by a length at the wire and stopped the clock at a blazing 37.69 seconds. Benny Da Jet settled for place as Jax Straw held on for the easy show at the finish line. Completing the money spots was the even running Kells Pretender.
And finally, was the winner from the Falcon Kennel, Critics Choice. Hard fought effort is a good way to describe the victory in the 7th race on the card. Breaking quickly, she took over from the instant she saw the box open and never looked back. Early she had just over a length on the rest of the field, but that was not going to be how she finished this race. Increasing steadily all the way to the wire, she stretched that margin a step at a time and finished 2.5 lengths ahead of her rivals at the finish line in 37.98 seconds. Applying pressure late was the steady gaining threat Businessasusual. Third went to the early factor Dutch Ranger, who pushed the pace in the early stages and ran out of gas a bit in the stretch. Like A Boss finished 4th with a strong closing effort. Starting out in last, Boss found some room and some extra drive in the second half of the race. Gaining with every stride late, he just missed in a photo for show at the finish line.
The field will be trimmed down for the quarter-finals and only the top 32 greyhounds will get a chance to acquire more points and have a chance to move on in the finals. After round two, the points are spread out in 2nd through 8th place, and there are several greyhounds left with a chance to throw their name into the mix before the semi-finals.
