Racing resumes at Golden Gate with mandatory Pick 6 dispersal

The last track to conduct Thoroughbred racing in California prior to the COVID-19-forced shutdown will be the first to restart this week when Golden Gate Fields resumes racing on Thursday.

While there are no allowances or stakes on the card, the attractive nine-race program includes four scheduled turf races and a mandatory dispersal in the Pick 6 Jackpot wager. The carryover heading into Thursday is $398,294.

First post is 3:45 p.m. ET, with the Pick 6 commencing in Race 4.

Racing will be held on a Thursday through Sunday basis, with closing day scheduled for June 14. There will be a special Memorial Day card on Monday, May 25, with the track dark the following Thursday, May 28.

Prior to the shutdown, the last Saturday in April would have been a stakes-laden card at Golden Gate. However, the stakes schedule has since been revamped with events spread out through the end of the meet.

The meet centerpiece – the $250,000 San Francisco Mile (G3) on the turf -- has been held over until closing day and could see a strong contingent from Southern California. The race will be approximately three weeks after the Shoemaker Mile (G1) at Santa Anita.

The other six-figure stakes at Golden Gate will be the first at the re-started meet, the $100,000 All American for older horses over a mile on the main track on Memorial Day.

The Golden Gate meet resumes with trainer Jonathan Wong and jockey Juan Hernandez the clear leaders in their respective standings.
