Racing Roundtable: Kentucky Derby and Oaks preps at Oaklawn and Gulfstream, Pool 6 of the KDFW

April 1st, 2025

In this week’s edition of the Racing Roundtable, Ashley Anderson, James Scully, and Vance review last weekend’s Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) preps at Oaklawn Park and Gulfstream Park, plus look ahead to the sixth and final pool of the 2025 Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

Sandman benefited from additional distance and a very hot pace to earn his first stakes win in the Arkansas Derby (G1), while the maiden Publisher ran the best race of his career to finish second. In the Florida Derby (G1), the Brad Cox-trained Tappan Street got the jump on the favored Sovereignty to earn his first stakes win in just his third career start.

Quietside and Five G, the one-two finishers in the Honeybee (G3) in February, flattered the form of that race by each taking an Oaks prep last weekend. Quietside repeated at Oaklawn, wearing down the pacesetting Simply Joking to win the Fantasy (G2). Five G, meanwhile, had little trouble dispensing with an overmatched field in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2).

Pool 6 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager runs this week from Thursday until Saturday afternoon, when wagering ceases right before the final round of major Derby preps. The gang discusses horses to watch and strategy for Pool 6, which closes right before post time for the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct, the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland, and the Santa Anita Derby (G1).
