Rains cannot dampen Tuesday card at Rosecroft
Even as afternoon rains initially turned the Rosecroft Raceway surface sloppy on Tuesday evening, the program proved to be rewarding for a number of owners and trainers who might have thought their various pacers forgot how to find the winner's circle.
In the fourth race, a non-winners of $2500 last five starts class for pacers, Yippi Ki Yeah (Frank Milby) ended a prolonged drought in a nice way as the 1-5 favorite. Winless in 18 starts last year and the first five outings of his current campaign, Yippi Ki Yeah lived up to his role as the odds-on choice when he brushed to command before the half and then cruised home to score in 1:55.3. The five-year-old Cam's Rocket stallion owned and traine dby Roger Hans now owns six wins in 41 career outings, with lifetime earnings nearing $90,000.
Then two races later on the card in a conditioned event for pacing fillies and mares, Bonnie Ben Jamin (Jared Moyer) also notched her first seasonal score in sharp fashion. The five-year-old Cam's Rocket mare brushed to command before reaching the half in 55 flat, led the field down the backside and by three-quarters and cruised home as much the best to score in 1:52.4, the fastest clocking of the night for male or female pacers. It was her first win in six starts on the season and she now sports 18 wins and earnings in excess of $190,00 from 43 career outings.
Then in the very next race on the card, another conditioned event for male pacers, another prodigy of Cam's Rocket found the winner's circle for the first time this season. Firecracker Freddy, a five-year-old stallion owned and trained by Hans, left to gain command in 27 flat, got a breather to the half and then held sway through the lane to score in 1:54.3 for his first win in six seasonal starts. Like Bonnie Ben Jamin, Firecracker Freddy is accustomed to winning and now boasts 18 victories and earnings of nearly $175,000 from 39 lifetime tries.
Several races later on the card, Toms Titan (Jonathan Roberts) rebounded from a bevy of failed promises to notch his first win of the campaign for trainer William "Bib" Roberts of Yankee Co-Ed and Trapeze fame. A four-year-old Nuclear Breeze stallion owned and bred by Thomas Cooke, Toms Titan gained command soon after the start and led throughout to score in 1:53.2, his first in four starts this year. Dominant among Maryland Sire Stakes rivals at age three, Toms Titan is hoping to regain his lost luster this spring and summer and last Tuesday was a good start.
Then in the finale, Stagecoach Holdup (Roger Plante, Jr.) ended a prolonged drought when he gained command soon after the start and led throughout to capture a non-winners of $4001 last five starts class for older pacers in 1:53.2. An eight-year-old Jk Outlaw gelding trained by Eli Scott, Jr., Stagecoach Holdup notched his first win in nine starts this season, matching his win total from all of last year when he managed only one trip to the winner's circle in 31 starts. He does own 21 career wins and earnings nearing $240,000.
Of course, the night also found a trio of trotters and pacers who notched their third wins of the season. Brilliance Hanover (Roberts) captured a conditioned event for trotters for owner-trainer Gerald Kelly in 1:58.3, then later Hot Art (Milby) led throughout to capture the $9000 Open 2 for the third time in five starts at the meet and later Dover Downs invader Springforth (Moyer) scored in the filly-mare Open
