Red Mile, Rosecroft and Yonkers offer Saturday action
With only three weeks remaining until the Breeders Crown finals at Hoosier Park, many of the sport's top trotters and pacers of all ages have been competing at The Red Mile in Lexington, Kentucky, while others have been at Yonkers preparing for the stellar, lucrative International Trot Day card next Saturday.
In the second race on the card, Hayden Hanover (Andy Miller) maintained his sharp form following a solid, second-place effort in the $650,000 Metro Stakes final when he gained command early, set honest fractions on the lead and held safe the late bid of favored This Is The Plan (Tim Tetrick) to score by a head in 1:50 in the opening split of the $58,000 Captaintreacherous. A juvenile son of Somebeachsomewhere trained by Julie Miller, Hayden Hanover recorded his second win from 10 starts and pushed his earnings toward $300,000.
This Is The Plan, another son of Somebeachsomewhere trained by Chris Ryder, saw his modest two-race win streak come to an end while racing well in defeat. This Is The Plan failed to earn a spot in the Metro final but won the consolation and then won a division of the Bluegrass Stakes one week earlier despite racing first over a long ways into a solid back half.
One race later on the card, Hannelore Hanover (Yannick Gingras) benefited from fast early fractions carved out by 65-1 outsider I Know My Chip (Sam Widger), angled out second over behind Crazy Wow (Matt Kakaley) heading into the far turn, fanned three-wide for the drive and rolled home to a three-length score over Homicide Hunter in a startling 1:49.2, the fastest mile ever recorded by a trotter of any age or either gender. A five-year-old Swan For All mare trained by Ron Burke, Hannelore Hanover notched her seventh win from 13 starts this year and pushed her seasonal earnings past $650,000 after taking the $136,000 Allerage in world record fashion.
Then one race later on the card, Youaremycandygirl (Gingras) left early, yielded to Rainbow Room (David Miller), sat a loose pocket trip to the half and three-quarters, angled out at the top of the lane and overhauled the leader easily to score by two lengths in 1:50, a world record for a two-year-old filly pacer. A freshman daughter of American Ideal trained by Ron Burke, Youaremycandygirl notched her third straight score and fifth victory in her seven career starts, handing Rainbow Room her second straight defeat and her third setback in nine lifetime tries.
Then several races later in the $120,000 Allerage Pace, Dealt A Winner (David Miller) overcame a long, first over bid and then outlasted McWicked (Brian Sears) to score by nearly a length in 1:47.3. A five-year-old Cam's Card Shark gelding trained by Mark Silva, Dealt A Winner now sports a 4-2-1 slate and $235,000 banked from 15 starts. McWicked raced well for trainer Casie Coleman and now owns a 7-4-2 slate and $370,000 bankroll from 24 starts and both seemed destined for the Breeders Crown elims and final at Hoosier and then perhaps both will head to the $100,000 Potomac Pace at Rosecroft Raceway on Nov. 5.
Speaking of Rosecroft, the Maryland five-eighths mile oval hosted a quartet of Maryland Sire Stakes elims to start its Saturday night card. I Run The Show won narrowly in 1:55, Iron Mine K defeated trotters in 1:59, Allie's Finale rallied to thump freshman colts in 1:53.3 and Gaagaa Gone (Russell Foster) remained perfect in five career outings by leading throughout to score in 2:00.1 for trainer Richard Hans and owner-breeder Corey Callahan.
Then just before the midway point of the Yonkers Raceway card, Always At My Place (George Brennan) lived up to his role as the 3-5 choice in the $50,000 Open Handicap when he gained command soon after the start and fended off all challengers to score in 1:51.4. A six-year-old Always A Virgin gelding trained by Burke, Always At My Place now owns an 8-3-2 slate and $140,000 bankroll from 22 starts this year. Scott Rocks raced first over to finish second, while Somewhere In L A and Bit Of A Legend N participated in training trips to prepare for next Saturday's $250,000 Dan Rooney Invitational.
