Responsibleforlove set for Red Carpet

November 22nd, 2017

Third at grade one level on her last racecourse outing, Responsibleforlove should appreciate the drop in class when she contests the 1 3/8-mile Red Carpet Handicap (G3) on the Del Mar turf Nov. 23.

Responsibleforlove was less than a length behind the winner Avenge in the Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Sept. 30, after not getting much luck hemmed in on the fence. With gate seven, she shouldn’t have that excuse this time.

Another dropping back in class – to a serious degree – is the former South American-trained Birdie Gold. She raced in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) Nov. 4 after having won the Clasico Pamplona (G1) in Argentina, and finished 12th behind Wuheida. The short back-up is not impossible, having been successfully done by Japanese filly Nuovo Record last year.

It’s an open field with 14 horses, but form lines suggest Evo Campo could be a big chance. She won the Santa Barbara Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita April 30, beating Responsibleforlove. She’s started just once in the meantime, finishing fourth in an Oct. 29 allowance on the Golden Gate all-weather track, and she should enjoy a return to turf.

East Coast invaders Galileo’s Song and Lottie both bring solid form with them as they seek a first graded stakes victory. Galileo’s Song has finished second in all three of her 2017 starts, the latest coming in the Long Island Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Nov. 4, while Lottie this year has finished second to Estrechada in the Aug. 5 Waya Stakes (G3) and third in the Oct. 22 Dowager Stakes (G3) behind Apple Betty. Lottie is also an entry for the Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) at Del Mar against the males the following day.

California-bred How Unusual has run well at stakes level on the Del Mar turf and should be considered for multiples, as should Earring, who finished second in the Long Island Handicap last year. Laseen, fifth in the Goldikova Stakes (G2) at Del Mar Nov. 4, and La Manta Gris, third in the Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs, could be ones for odds.
