Rosecroft hosts four Maryland Sire Stakes finals
While fans of the National Football League were recovering from a full day of action on Sunday, Rosecroft Raceway hosted a quartet of $70,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals for two-year-olds of both gaits and genders amid ideal conditions on the early fall evening.
In the second of the two early, non-betting events for Maryland Sire Stakes finals, Yall Beneath Me (Russell Foster) continued to impress local owners, trainers and spectators when he easily overcame post nine to brush to command passing the grandstands the first time, strolled through honest splits of 57.2 and 1:26 flat on a clear lead and romped home 14 lengths the best under wraps in 1:55.1.
A juvenile son of Googoo Gaagaa owned, bred and trained by Richard Hans, Yall Beneath Me remained perfect in seven career tries and pushed his lifetime earnings toward $100,000 by romping home much the best under confident handling. Yall Beneath Me has not only stayed perfect, he has won his seven starts by an average of nearly 20 lengths while completely unasked by Foster and looms a serious contender for major open stakes nest season.
"I just let them settle early," Foster said. "I just didn't want to make any mistakes. I've never turned the whip over on him. He's always done it completely on his own."
In the other early non-betting MDSS final, Grey (Allan Davis) picked the ideal time to garner her diploma when she rallied inside along the passing lane to prevail in 1:58.3. Trained by Mike Hall, Grey notched her first career victory in eight tries and pushed her earnings past $40,000. Had the event been a parimutuel one, Grey may have been sent off at 25-1 or higher due to her maiden status.
In the first $70,000 MDSS final that offered parimutuel wagering, Jordons All In (John Wagner) outlasted stablemate and entrymate Nvrfearlloydishere (Eddie Davis, Jr.) to capture the final for two-year-old colt pacers in 1:52.4. A juvenile son of Rusty's All In trained by Arlene Cameron and owned by Pamela Wagner, Jordons All In notched his third win from eight career tries and doubled his earnings past $65,000 while taking the MDSS final named in honor of the late Earl Wagner, the driver's father.
Two races later in the last of the four $70,000 MDSS finals, Fire Me Up (Jared Moyer) left alertly to secure god position then inherited the lead when 3-5 favorite Breeze Away B (Robbie White) broke stride on the first turn and left the course, got a breather by the half in 58.2, rebuffed pressure from I'd Be Rich (Corey Callahan) down the backside, opened a clear lead on the far turn and held safe entry mate Nats A Lady (Wagner) to score by two lengths in 1:56.1.
A juvenile daughter of Rusty's All In trained by Cameron for Pamela Wagner, Fire Me Up notched her fourth win in eight starts and nearly doubled her earnings past $72,000. Breeze Away B overcame early trouble to rally widest of all in the lane to get third, but was promptly disqualified and placed last for leaving the course. It was the second straight MDSS final in which Cameron trainees finished one-two and took home three of the top four spots.
One race later in a non-winners of $4,000 last four starts class for older pacers, Roliin Ring Afire (Allan Davis) benefited from a pocket trip behind Prince Clyde (Foster) through honest early fractions of 26.4, 54.3 and 1:23.1 through the first three calls, angled out of the two-hole turning for home then overhauled the leader in the lane for a neck victory in 1:51. It was the second straight victory over the oval for the seven-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by Willard Reynolds.
Several races later in the $12,500 Maryland Open for older pacers, Capital Builder (Jonathan Roberts) benefited from a pocket trip behind Star Messenger (Tony Morgan) through the first three calls, angled to the passing lane and outkicked a gritty, first over Romantic Interest (Frank Milby) to forge a mild 6-1 upset in 1:51.1. Trained by Megan Roberts for father William "Bib" Roberts, Capital Builder now owns a 6-5-3 slate and $52,000 banked from 25 starts this year and 22 wins and just over $150,000 banked from 88 career outings.
Then two races later in the $12,000 Open Handicap for older pacers, Rollinlikethunder (Eddie Davis, Jr.) lived up to his role as the 6-5 favorite when he overcame a fourth over trip and side journey on the far turn to overhaul 13-1 shot Allie's Finale (Roger Plante, Jr.) in the lane for a neck score in 1:50.3. A four-year-old Roll With Joe gelding trained by Eli Scott, Jr. for owners Danny Warrington and Donald Hawk, Rollinlikethunder now owns a 7-4-2 slate and $82,000 banked from 25 starts this year and 14 wins and over $126,000 banked from 45 career outings.
