Rosecroft Hosts Maryland Sire Stakes Finals on Closing Night
A brief shower could hardly dampen the enthusiasm for the quartet of Maryland Sire Stakes finals on the Wednesday evening card that also featured a bevy of solid overnight races as the track honored its top trotter and top pacer and leading trainer and leading driver.
In the first of the four MDSS finals on the card, Holy Trout (Roger Plante, Jr.) easily overcame post six to gain command in a 28.2 opener, got a breather to the half in 1:00 flat and then edged clear in the final quarter-mile to score in 1:59.1. A sophomore daughter of Holy Guacamole trained by Steve LeBlanc for owner-breeder William Solomon, Holy Trout has now won all five of her starts this year and boasts 13 wins in 17 career starts with lifetime earnings of $105,000.
Then one race later on the card, Mr Ham Sandwich (Russell Foster) overcame post seven to gain command in a 26.1 opener, got a breather to the half in 56.1 and then edged clear from his foes to a three-length score in 1:52.3. A three-year-old Cam's Rocket colt trained by Judy Welty for owner-breeder Brian Emerson, Mr Ham Sandwich notched his fourth win in five starts this year and now owns 10 wins from 13 career outings with lifetime earnings of $93,000.
Then one race later on the card, Hybrid Henry (Foster) proved to the better part of the 1-9 entry when he gained command soon after the start and led throughout to score in 1:55.4 in the $70,000 MDSS final in 1:55.4. A sophomore Cam's Rocket owned, bred and trained by Richard Hans, Hybrid Henry recorded his second win in five starts this year and now owns 11 wins and nearly $120,000 banked from 15 career outings.
Then one race later in the $64,000 MDSS final for three-year-old filly pacers, Miss Valerie (Plante) rebounded from her first career setback in an elimination heat the week before when she benefited from a pocket trip to the half and three-quarters then angled out on the far turn and edged clear in the lane to a two-length score in 1:54. Another talented LeBlanc-trained sophomore, Miss Valerie has won twice in three starts this year and now boasts 12 wins in 13 career outings with earnings of over $110,000.
Also on the Wednesday card, Breadcrumb Income, who finished third in the featured "winners over" behind the classy Rhapsody Rose (Plante), was selected as the Rosecroft Raceway pacer of the meet. Whitesville Dixon (David Hill, III), a homebred for owner-trainer-breeder Gary White of Delmar, Maryland, was tabbed as the trotter of the meet by track management. McKenry, who will compete in the Open Handicap at Harrington Raceway on Monday, was the horse of the meet in voting conducted by members of the United States Harness Writers Association.
In addition to the equine champions, Rosecroft honored its human champions as Russell Foster captured the driving title outright after sharing the honor at two previous meets, while trainer Ken Schlotzhauer reclaimed the training title after yielding the honor to Brian Burton last fall.
