Rosecroft hosts solid Monday card

October 29th, 2019

Since many of the local owners and trainers have to travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to compete at Roseroft Raceway two nights each week have found traffic virtually unbearable amid the ongoing bridge repairs, the track has moved the Sunday cards up one night to Monday night and that program has developed into its best of the week.

In the opening race on Monday night, Home N Dry overcame missing a week due to bridge traffic and post eight to capture the $10,000 Open Trot by nearly a length in 1:54.1. A seven-year-old Credit Winner gelding trained by Brian Malone, Home N Dry now owns a 5-1-1 slate and $27,000 banked from 16 starts and sports a 20-11-10 slate and nearly $350,000 banked from 89 career tries. His triumph on Monday night represented a new seasonal best and just missed equaling his lifetime mark of 1:53.4.

Several races later in the $12,000 Maryland Open for pacers, an early prep for the upcoming $25,000 Maryland Invitational on the undercard of the $100,000 Potomac Pace on Sunday, November 10 - that card has not been switched to Monday - Slick Tony (Russell Foster) lived up to his role as the 1-5 favorite from his assigned post eight when he brushed to command before the half, met serious pressure from Romantic Interest (Frank Milby) down the backside and through the far turn, rebuffed that one and edged clear from Allie's Finale (Roger PLante, Jr.) for a length score in 1:50.3.

A four-year-old son of No Spin Zone owned, bred and trained by George "Ronnie" Leager, Slick Tony notched his fourth straight victory and now owns 14 wins and over $175,000 banked from 33 seasonal outings. The recent selection as Harrington Raceway's spring meet champion where he was the dominant force in the $20,000 Open, Slick Tony now owns 32 wins and over $550,000 banked from 67 career outings and could return next month for the $25,000 Invitational or possibly the $100,000 Potomac.

Speaking of the Potomac, reigning harness horse of the year, McWicked, fourth as the favorite in the Breeders Crown Open Pace on Saturday night, and Breeders Crown hero, American History, who also boasts a prior victory in the $150,000 Bobby Quillen Memorial at Harrington, headline a group that could also include a pair of Ron Burke trainees and reigning Maryland-bred harness horse of the year, Courtly Choice, hero of both the Meadowlands Pace and Little Brown Jug last season.

One race later in a non-winners of $2,500 last four starts class for older pacers, Hickory Aloha (Timmy Offutt) lived up to his role as the 1-2 favorite when nhe gained command from post seven before a 26.4 opener, maintained an honest tempo to the half in 55.3 and three-quarters in 1:23.2 and held safe Artic Adventure (Milby) and Concert Artist (Jason Thompson) to score by a length in 1:52. A former horse of the meet at Rosecroft and Ocean Downs, Hickory ALoha now owns a 4-5-4 slate and $35,000 banked from 28 seasonal outings.

One race later in a non-winners of $4,000 last four class for older pacers, Ideal Perfect Ten (John Wagner) overcame en extended first over bid to forge a mild 7-2 upset in 1:53.1. A sophomore son of American Ideal trained by Arlene Cameron, Ideal Perfect Ten now owns a 4-6-1 slate and over $30,000 banked from20 starts this year

Then one race later in another non-winners of $2,500 last four starts class for older pacers, Downwyn Shark (Tony Morgan) overcame post eight and a parked-the-mile journey to forge a 7-1 upset in 1:53.3. A four-year-old Shadyshark Hanover gelding trained by Brian Wright, Downwyn Shark stepped up in class to notch his fourth win from 29 starts this year and will likely be headed for another class hike this weekend.

One race later in a non-winners of $6,000 last four starts class for older pacers, Cash is King (sean Bier) gained command soon after the start, got a breather to the half in 56.2 then held safe the late, second over bid of Hi Sir (Foster) to score by a nose in 1:52.1. A six-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained and driven by Bier, Cash Is King now owns a 6-8-5 slate and nearly $70,000 banked from 36 starts this year. Hi Sir was very game in defeat and may earn a spot in the Maryland Invitational in two weeks.
