Rosecroft offers four Maryland Sire Stakes finals on closing night
Wednesday evening may have marked the final program of the Rosecroft Raceway winter-spring meet, but for numerous owners, trainers and drivers with trotters and pacers competing in their respective Maryland Sire Stakes finals and overnight events it only marked the beginning of a new season of promise.
In the opening, non-betting $67,000 MDSS final for three-year-old colt trotters on the card, Charlie De Vie (Corey Callahan) left alertly to secure good position behind What That Is (Brian Burton), sat a loose pocket to the half and three-quarters, angled out midway on the far turn and went right by the leader and held safe the late bid of Uncle Ike to score by three lengths in 1:55.1. The sophomore son of Chucky De Vie trained by Hermann Heitman recorded his first win in six starts this year and now owns a 3-4-2 slate and $75,000 banked from 18 career tries.
Then one race later in the second MDSS final, a non-betting event for three-year-old filly trotters, Gaagaa Gone (Callahan) easily overcame post position nine to gain command in a 28.3 opener, maintained an honest tempo by the half and three-quarters then held sway late to score by three lengths in 1:56.2. A sophomore daughter of Googoo Gaagaa trained by Shaun Callahan and owned by her driver, Gaagaa Gone notched her third win in four starts this year and now owns 11 wins and $85,000 banked from 14 career tries. Her final clocking represented a new lifetime mark and MDSS record for this group.
Then one race later in the first parimutuel race on the card, the $67,000 MDSS final for three-year-old filly pacers, Miss Choptank (Victor Kirby) benefited from an honest early tempo carved out by HS Shauna (Roger Plante, Jr.) and overcame excess cover when she rallied widest of all in the lane to score by a length in 1:52.3. A sophomore daughter of Total Truth trained by Wayne Givens for Legacy Racing, Miss Choptank notched her second win in five starts this year and now owns a solid 7-7-1 slate and nearly $95,000 banked from 19 lifetime tries.
Then one race later in the $67,000 MDSS final for three-year-old colt pacers, Allie's Finale (Plante) overcame a long, first over bid and wore down 1-5 favorite BT's Breeze (Kirby) for a half-length score in 1:51.4. A sophomore son of Allie's Western trained by Steve Le Blanc, Allie's Finale notched his third win in four starts this year and now owns 10 wins and just over $100,000 banked from 14 lifetime tries. BT's Breeze had been superb in his previous two starts for owner-trainer Bryan Truitt, but gave way late and settled for third in this event.
Then just past the midway point of the 13-race closing night card, Act Like A Diva (Russell Foster) benefited from live cover second over behind Upfront Supersonic (Richard Still) down the backside and through the far turn, swept to command at the head of the lane and outlasted the late bid of 4-5 favorite Breadcrumb Income (Brian Burton) to score in 1:52. A three-year-old daughter of Roll With Joe owned and trained by Mike Hall, Act Like A Diva notched her third win in eight starts this year and now owns six wins and $57,000 banked from 21 lifetime outings.
Immediately after the featured overnight event for pacing fillies and mares, driver Frank Milby was honored as the track's leading driver with 54 victories and trainer Arlene Cameron was recognized as the track's top trainer. Fashion Smile and Capital Builder, both of which are trained by Meagan Roberts, were tabbed as trotter of the meet and pacer of the meet by Rosecroft track management and the local scribes.
