Rosecroft Raceway fall meet set to start this weekend
Tuesday morning the Rosecroft Raceway fall meet unofficially got under way when the Maryland five-eighths mile oval hosted a half-dozen qualifiers as several very familiar faces, human and equine, made their presence known.
In the opening qualifier of the morning, What That Is (Brian Burton) rallied from well off the pace to prevail in 2:00.3 in a race restricted to trotters. The juvenile Cam's Rocket gelding is trained by Judith Welty. One race later in a qualifier for two-year-old pacers, Toms Titanium (Burton) led throughout to score in 1:58.3 for trainer Roger Hans.
One race later it was Nefarious (Kim Vincent) who proved genuine when he romped home six lengths clear in 1:57.2. The four-year-old Dr. Mcdreamy gelding trained and driven by Vincent could be poised for a solid fall meet in the local Open. The Perfect One (Jonathan Roberts), a juvenile daughter of Ponder trained by Richard Hans, scored in 2:01.
But the last two qualifiers featured proven older commodities. Breadcrumb Income (Burton) led throughout and romped home four lengths clear in 1:54.2 for her owner-trainer-driver. The four-year-old Nuclear Breeze filly was the Rosecroft Raceway overnight horse of the meet in the spring and looks poised for a solid fall campaign as well.
Then in the final qualifier of the morning, Brody (Jason Thompson) outlasted stablemate I Am Supersonic (Sean Bier) to score in 1:56.4. Brody began the spring meet by winning the Open twice but was not among the serious contenders for horse of the meet in May when the track opted for Breadcrumb Income and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association sided with McKenny.
Rosecroft will host several Maryland Sire Stakes and Maryland Standardbred Race Fund events this fall, but the highlight will be the $100,000 Potomac Pace for older free-for-all pacers. All Bets Off won the inaugural event last fall in 1:48.2, equaling the all-age track record on a night when temperatures dipped into the upper teens. The Ron Burke trainee won the $160,000 Dan Patch last weekend at Hoosier Park and will likely return to defend his title against a prospective group of Bit Of A Legend N, Mach It So, Mel Mara, Keystone Velocity, Missile J, McWicked and Somewhere In L A.
