Roy H. Seeks Better Luck in Sprint Championship

A clean trip will be the main wish for the connections of Roy H. as he seeks a second chance at grade one glory in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1) Oct. 7.
Roy H. was carted several horse widths wide on the turn in the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar July 29 by the riderless champion sprinter Drefong, giving Ransom the Moon a saloon passage along the rail. The eventual margin in Ransom the Moon’s favor was a length and a half.
The pair meet again in the Sprint Championship, which as a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race earns the winner a direct entry into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, with Roy H. tipped to get his revenge as the 8-5 morning-line favorite.
Roy H.’s effort in the Bing Crosby came after he’d won his first graded stakes race, the True North Stakes (G2) from Stallwalkin Dude and Whitmore.
Ransom the Moon (5-2 morning-line) shouldn’t be overlooked however. His previous 2017 efforts include victory in the Kona Gold Stakes (G2) and a second-place finish to Danzing Candy in the San Carlos Stakes (G2).
Returning west after finishing third to Practical Joke in the H. Allen Jerkens Stakes (G1) at Saratoga is American Anthem. Prior to that race he’d won the Lazaro Barrera Stakes (G3) and the Woody Stephens Stakes (G2).
American Anthem is rated a 3-1 morning-line chance along with the improving Pat O’Brien Stakes (G2) winner Giant Expectations. Pat O’Brien Stakes fourth-place finisher Mr. Hinx and Edwards Going Left, who takes on graded stakes company for the first time, complete the field.
Roy H. will get a great chance for a grade one victory provided there’s no crazy interference like he suffered in the Bing Crosby, but Ransom the Moon will still be a tough opponent, and American Anthem should also be in with a serious chance. The multiples could prove to be interesting.
