Royal Ascot Meet Starts on June 20
The Royal Ascot Meet starts on Tuesday, June 20. The most famous meet in Great Britain, the summer Royal Ascot Meet should be forever etched into our minds thanks to Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. "Dover! Move your bloomin' arse," Hepburn said in the film.
Oh, there's pretty good racing as well. See below for the 5 most important races each day during the Royal Ascot Summer Meet. I add some info on each of the expected favorites for each race.
This year, the favorite is Ribchester. Since Ribchester's morning line odds are at 4/5, there's a good chance he ends up 3/5 or less. He easily won the Locking Stakes in his last. Ribchester took the lead and ran on. I'm not sure I'd go with him at Royal Ascot. The last time he raced at Royal Ascot, last October, he finished second to Minding.
I'm looking for a closer because on paper there appears to be a ton of speed.
The top 3 betting interests so far in Wednesday's Prince of Wales are Jack Hobbs at 7/2, Ulysses at 7/2, and Highland Reel at 3/1. Highland Reel might go off at 5/2 or less in this race. Highland Reel did win the Coronation Cup earlier this month.
But, the Aidan O'Brien trainee doesn't often win 2 in a row. After his Breeders' Cup Turf win, he finished second in the Hong Kong Vase. Then, he finished 7th in the Dubai Sheema Classic.
I believe he'll be an over bet favorite. I'm definitely looking elsewhere. Both Simple Verse and Vazirabad offer 7 to 1, and 6 to 1 right now. I'll start my handicapping by looking at those 2.
Is she a 3/5 horse? She might be. She won both the English 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1000 Guineas. Those are 2 incredibly prestigious races. I might try to beat her with a big longshot. Aidan horses Hydrangea, and Roly Poly should offer double-digit odds. So should La Coronel, trained by Mark Casse.
La Coronel is a possibility for the Coronation Stakes. Since she's only a Grade 3 winner in the U.S., few, if any, European horseplayers are going to bet on her. She's a good grass filly sired by one of America's former racing stars, Tiznow. I'll have a few bucks on her if she shows up in the starting gate on Thursday.
No worries. Welker always has the DJS in 2015, right? This year, the favorite is Limato at 9/2. It's going to be awfully difficult to beat Limato in 6 furlong turf sprint. Limato is a heck of a race horse. But, The Tin Man, a 5-year old gelding not the Tin Man from the early 2000's, should be a in a position to do his best running late while getting a jump on the closers. His odds are currently at 8/1

The Queen Anne is the first race on June 20. Some of the greatest horses to ever run have won the Queen Anne. Frankel won the Queen Anne Stakes in 2012. In 2016, Tepin took home the Queen Anne. It might be the most prestigious race that the superstar mare had ever won.This year, the favorite is Ribchester. The always popular Prince of Wales Stakes takes place on Wednesday. The Fugue won the race in 2014. American horseplayers might have an easier time picking the Prince of Wales Stakes winner than they do picking the Queen Anne Stakes winner. The brilliant Yeats took home the Ascot Gold Cup trophy in 2009. Arguably the most important race of any during the 5-day meet, this year's favorite in the Gold Cup is Order of St. Georges at 6/4. Order of St. Georges comes off a win in the Saval Beg Stakes. That race is nowhere near the same quality as his win in the 2016 Ascot Gold Cup.I believe he'll be an over bet favorite. Wes Welker, former wide receiver great with the New England Patriots, is part-owner of Undrafted, seen here winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2015.
