Ruidoso Downs Previews Upcoming Live Racing Season with Training Races

May 11th, 2017

The 2017 Quarter Horse meet at Ruidoso Downs will get underway on Friday, May 26.

AQHA Champion trainer Paul Jones had several standouts in this week's training races

This week, the New Mexico racetrack hosted training races for 2-year-olds and plenty of talent was evident each morning.

These races offer invaluable training experience for young racehorses. While they have all had a series of breezes and timed works, the schooling and training races familiarize them with loading into the starting gate, standing and breaking from the gate. Their conditioners can gain insight into how their horses handled the elements, and add gate works, flipping rigs, blinkers or other equipment adjustments.

The fastest clocking from Monday’s training races went to Surfin Corona Beach, a daughter of Corona Cartel, trained by AQHA champion trainer Paul Jones. The following day another Jones trainee, Droff drew off to a four-length win. He was sired by Fdd Dynasty. Trainer Trey Wood had the top performer in Wednesday’s heats, a Walk Thru Fire filly named U R My Queen.

Apollitical Chad won the 2016 Ruidoso Futurity last June.

The majority of these week’s trainees will make their debut in trials for the $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1), which will be contested on May 26-27. The ten fastest qualifiers will return for the 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity on June 11.

In last year’s schooling races, A Revenant was one of the top performers, but it was Apollitical Chad who won the 2016 Ruidoso Futurity.

There will be plenty to look forward to this year at Ruidoso Downs. A complete stakes schedule is available at www.raceruidoso.com, and the annual live racing season always wraps up on Labor Day with the running of the prestigious $3-million All American Futurity (G1).
