Santa Anita: Use these 8-1 shots in the $19,919 Super High 5 carryover

If two graded stakes aren’t reason enough to play the Sunday card at Santa Anita, there’s also a $19,919 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.

The prize pool is on the table in Race 10, the final event of the day. It’s a $20,000 allowance optional claimer for California-bred fillies and mares racing one mile on turf, and an overflow field of 12 horses (including two also-eligibles) has entered.

It’s a tricky race to handicap in part because morning line favorite #6 Runamileinmyshoes (9-5) appears vulnerable. She won over this class level on dirt last time out, but her turf form isn’t as strong. She finished fifth over this class level racing one mile over the Del Mar turf two starts back, earning an 81 Brisnet Speed rating eight points lower than the 89 she earned on dirt.

Furthermore, Runamileinmyshoes has been defeated this year by #5 Ashleys Sandcastle (15-1) and #1 Quantum Innergy (6-1), both of whom are back in the entries on Sunday. Neither one is in stellar form at the moment, but the point is, Runamileinmyshoes can’t be viewed as unbeatable while returning to turf.

Instead, let us recommend a couple of midrange longshots worth supporting: #7 Only Reputation (8-1) and #9 Shezmisbehaving (8-1).

Only Reputation has only run once, rallying from off the pace to win a five-furlong turf maiden special weight for California-breds at Del Mar. The three-year-old daughter of Sir Prancealot boasts the pedigree to handle stretching out over one mile and has plenty of upside for trainer Ryan Hanson, who wins at a 33% rate with horses running on grass for the second time.

As for Shezmisbehaving, she hasn’t started since finishing seventh in the May 25 Fran’s Valentine S. for California-breds racing one mile over the Santa Anita lawn. She’d previously won a non-state-restricted $50,000 starter allowance over the same course and distance. The five-year-old mare owns competitive Brisnet Speed ratings and enters off a series of sharp workouts over five and six furlongs, suggesting she’s fit to fire a competitive shot in her return.

We recommend playing Only Reputation and Shezmisbehaving on top in the Super High 5 while relegating Runamileinmyshoes to the underneath slots.
