Scully: All-Stakes Pick 5 play at Pimlico Friday

James Scully

May 19th, 2023

Pimlico will offer six Pick 5s on Friday, including a special two-day wager, and the $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) for three-year-old fillies anchors an all-stakes Pick 5 sequence that begins in Race 9.

I’ll play a $45 ticket utilizing the following horses.

50-cent Pick 5 (Races 9-13): 2,5,11 with 2 with 2,3,8,10,11 with 2,5 with 3,7,10 ($45)

Race 9 - The Very One S., 3:36 p.m. (ET)

#11 Get the Candy (15-1) rates the edge, opening 2023 with a sharp win over a nice field at Gulfstream, and Mike Maker has the reformed claimer ready for stakes competition this season. She will show speed from the outside with Luis Saez. Look for a better trip from #2 Train to Artemus (3-1), and comebacker #5 Thundering Creed (6-1) offers some appeal.

Race 10 – Miss Preakness (G3), 4:07 p.m.

#2 Key of Life (1-1) cuts back to a favorable six-furlong distance after holding on in the Beaumont (G2) at Keeneland, the same pattern trainer Brad Cox used with eventual champion filly sprinter Covfefe, who romped in the 2019 Miss Preakness following a narrow win at Keeneland. I’ll single here.

Race 11 – Hilltop S., 4:38 p.m.

#8 Up and Down (6-1), one of two runners for Chad Brown, is my top choice off a convincing maiden win at Keeneland. I’m against the morning-line favorite (Breath Away), will also use #2 Aunt Shirley (9-2), #3 Aspray (8-1), #10 After Eight (12-1), and #11 Well Into (5-1).

Race 12 – Pimlico Special (G3), 5:10 p.m.

#2 Rattle N Roll (9-5) appears to be discovering his best form and will take some beating following a convincing win in the Ben Ali (G3) at the distance, but the late runner must reel in #5 Law Professor (5-2), who doesn’t always transfer his form outside of New York but remains a threat to hold his own if on his game.

Race 13 – Black-Eyed Susan (G2), 5:44 p.m.

I’ll take a stand against odds-on favorite Faiza — not keen on the added ground or post, and the fillies who finished second to her in the last four starts have been beaten badly outside of California. #7 Comparative (12-1) is my upset pick. The up-and-coming filly received a co-field best 95 Brisnet Speed rating when defeating allowance foes last time, and #3 Hoosier Philly (10-1) and #10 Taxed (15-1) will also be added.
