Scully: Breeders' Cup Friday Pick 5 play

Juveniles will be showcased in five Breeders’ Cup races at Keeneland Friday, and my strongest opinion comes in the finale.

Here is how I will play the Late Pick 5.

Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) – Race 6

Five of the 12 runners are from overseas, and I’ll lean upon a trio of English-based runners: Charlie Appleby’s #5 Mischief Magic, Group 2 scorer #6 Persian Force, and last-out Prix de l’Abbaye (G1) winner #12 Platinum Queen.

Juvenile Fillies (G1) – Race 7

#7 Chop Chop overcame a slow start and was bumped in deep stretch when finishing a nose second in her first dirt start, the Alcibiades (G1), and the long-striding filly should move forward off the encouraging showing. She won’t have to break from the inside this time, and appears to be training forwardly in preparation for Brad Cox.

I’ll include #2 You’re My Girl, a wire-to-wire threat from the inside with John Velazquez.

Juvenile Turf Fillies (G1) – Race 8

No strong opinion in this competitive mile affair.

#6 Be Your Best, who didn’t appreciate the soft ground last time, rates a slight edge for top honors, but I will spread with #5 Pleasant Passage, #7 Spirit Gal, #9 Delight, #10 Meditate, and #12 Midnight Mile.

Juvenile (G1) – Race 9

#3 Cave Rock towers over rivals in Brisnet Speed ratings, earing 104-105-107 figures winning his first three starts impressively. The frontrunning colt may face speed to his inside, and if he gets softened up dueling on a hot pace, #8 Lost Ark rates a look for the upset.

A sharp winner of his first two starts, and a full-brother to Nest, Lost Ark lost all chance when experiencing a dreadful trip in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) last time, rallying belatedly for sixth. The stalker will look to settle in midpack with new rider Luis Saez.

Juvenile Turf (G1)

#2 Packs a Wahlop won’t be far back with his tactical speed, and he packs a late punch, winning all three turf starts by open lengths. He overpowered foes when winning a maiden and the Del Mar Juvenile Turf (G3) in August, and the gray colt couldn’t have been more professional in the Oct. 9 Zuma Beach (G3) at Santa Anita, kicking with a dynamic turn of foot before winning under wraps. Mike Smith, a 27-time Breeders’ Cup race winner, will be up on my single.
