Scully: Handicapping Breeders’ Cup Friday

James Scully

November 1st, 2019

The Breeders’ Cup begins today with a five-race “Future Stars Friday” program.

Here are my thoughts on the races:

Juvenile Turf Sprint:

I will use the Wesley Ward duo of 7 Kimari & 9 Four Wheel Drive on all multi-race bets. Both should be prominent from the start.

Juvenile Turf:

I give the edge to 14 Hit the Road, who appears poised for his best off a couple of nice wins at Del Mar and Santa Anita. 2 Structor, 5 Vitalogy, 8 Billy Batts and 12 Arizona all deserve consideration for multi-race wagers in my estimation.

Juvenile Fillies:

With a hot and contested pace expected, 8 K P Dreamin can take advantage. The Jeff Mullins-trained daughter of Union Rags rallied to post a sharp maiden win when stretching out to two turns at Del Mar, and she had no chance behind a soft pace in the Chandelier (G1), settling for third. Look for an improved performance. I will play her top and bottom in vertical exotics with 4 British Idiom and 7 Wicked Whisper.

Juvenile Fillies Turf:

The Europeans look interesting to me and I will play 5 Daahyeh to win if she doesn’t get bet down much from her 5-1 morning line. International raiders 9 Albigna and 14 Etoile; Todd Pletcher’s 12 Sweet Melania; and Chad Brown’s 13 Selflessly will be added to multi-race tickets.

Juvenile:

Dennis’ Moment did not make the early lead in his debut or the Iroquois (G3) last time, and if he doesn’t show high speed from a difficult rail post, 6 Eight Rings has the speed to clear from post 6. He dominated the September 27 American Pharoah (G1) at Santa Anita on the front end and I like him wire to wire today.

Good luck on Breeders’ Cup Friday!
